The Ford F-150 Lightning vs. Tesla Cybertruck

June 2, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org 1 Comment

America’s best- selling vehicle now has an electric alter ego. Allow Blogger Jake to introduce you to the new Ford F-150 and Tesla’s upcoming Cybertruck.

By Jake Sonderman, Business Correspondent

2022 Ford F-150 Lightning First Look: The Electric Pickup Has a Shockingly Low Price, Mega Specs
Cybertruck | Tesla

With over 600,000 units sold a year, the Ford F-150 pickup has been America’s best-selling vehicle for years (kbb.com). More recently, Tesla has grown exponentially in the last year and has made a name for itself by being different from other traditional car manufacturers. Tesla further differentiated itself with the introduction of the Cybertruck, an electric pickup with very high performance and a very unique, futuristic look. Ford, however, recently introduced the Ford F-150 Lightning, an electric F-150 that is almost indistinguishable from a traditional F-150 in appearance. These two trucks are set to hit the market in 2022, and I am fascinated to see how they will measure up. Though you cannot buy either of these trucks from the dealership just yet, we still can compare them to see each’s advantages and disadvantages.

Performance

The performance for the dual motor versions of each truck is remarkably similar, with the Cybertruck at a slight edge.

For both, 0-60mph is around 4.5 seconds.

The F-150 Lightning upgraded version (about the same price point as the Cybertruck dual motor) has 563 horsepower, and the Cybertruck has an estimated 690 horsepower (motortrend.com). Take this with a grain of salt as Tesla hasn’t released numbers like the truck’s horsepower, and that number is only an estimated number.

The F-150 Lightning has 775 lb-ft of torque, and the Cybertruck dual-motor is estimated to have 824 lb-ft of torque. For reference, a gas-powered 2021 F-150 has 570 lb-ft of torque.

Both models (including the upgraded F-150 Lightning) have a 300-mile range.

*stats from ford.com, tesla.com, and kbb.com.

Exterior and Interior Appearance

Obviously, the Cybertruck is not exactly trying to fit in. Those who purchase the Cybertruck are looking to stand out. This is pretty much the stark opposite of the F-150 Lightning. This truck is barely distinguishable from the normal F-150. I have to say that the appearance of the Cybertruck is certainly limiting its market. While the Cybertruck might have superior performance, it has a look that only a specific consumer likes. In my opinion, if the Cybertruck adopted a more tame look in line with Tesla’s other cars, it would most definitely end up selling more trucks in the long run. The appearance is the most clear difference between these two vehicles.

The interior of the Cybertruck follows suit with the exterior. Instead of a steering wheel, it has an airplane-inspired yoke. All features are available in the 17-inch display, and, of course, there is no switchgear (kbb.com). The F-150 has an interior very similar to other Ford 2021 vehicles, with a 15.5-inch touchscreen in the middle of the dash.

Ford F-150 Lightning Advantages

Ford is touting the Lightning’s ability to be used as a backup generator for your entire house for three days (with a full charge)! There are also multiple outlets on the vehicle to use during a camping trip or whatever you please. The F-150 Lightning also appeals to a different market than the Cybertruck in my opinion, simply because of its appearance. The Lightning is a clear attempt to create an electric vehicle meant for work and practicality. The Cybertruck is probably competing more with the Raptor crowd, looking for high performance and flash. The F-150 also has an actual steering wheel.

Cybertruck Advantages

The most clear advantage of the Cybertruck is the option for a tri-motor truck. This truck has the performance of a sports car, with a sub 3 second 0-60 mph, 800 horsepower, and 1,000 lb-ft of torque. For reference, 18 wheelers have 1,000-2,000 lb-ft of torque (auto.edu). This much performance is far beyond practicality but will certainly attract the certain niche sporty-truck audience. You can also, of course, use Tesla chargers.

Mermaids in the Ocean??!!

June 2, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org 1 Comment

In this blog Hannah describes many different types of sea life. Good luck exploring! — Editor Roman Rickwood

By Hannah Hall, Nature Correspondent

It’s summer. Quarantine restrictions are loosening. The time is coming when you will see, splashed across social media, people on their tropical vacations. Although I am not one of those people, congratulations to you if you are. Still, that doesn’t mean I can’t create a makeshift island experience. I found one way to do that is pretend snorkeling. All you have to do is look up snorkeling pictures underwater.

Unfortunately, you will not find mermaids, but here I have done a little bit of research regarding some species you can find under the sea.

Green Sea Turtle

The green sea turtle has a smooth dark brown or olive-colored shell and green-tinged flesh which comes from their diet. They are herbivores and eat reef, sea grass, and algae. Hatchlings, however, do eat jellyfish and invertebrates. When fully grown, on average, they are 3-4 ft long and 350 pounds but can get up to 5ft and 700 pounds! The turtles migrate throughout the entire ocean during their lifetime, but only females come to shore to lay eggs. Female turtles always go back to the same beach on which they were born no matter the distance. They lay about 100-200 eggs, and they hatch in over two months. Oftentimes predators such as birds and crabs will go after these eggs and hatchlings, which makes the yield pretty low, estimating that only 1 in 1000 or even 1 in 10,000 survive till adulthood. Green Sea Turtles are an endangered species, but, unfortunately due to hunting, man-made accidents, climate change, and habitat loss, the numbers are still waning. In fact, the National Wildlife Federation predicts that “90 percent [of the sea turtle] population decrease[d] over the past half century.” Still, their lifespan is pretty long, ranging from 80-100 years.

Clownfish

Clownfish, also known as false clownfish or clown anemonefish, are known by their iconic bright orange color with white and black stripes, but they can also come in colors such as “pink, red, yellow, black, brown and multi-colored stripes” (livescience.com). Clownfish live in the south-east corner of the world in shallow waters. They create a symbiotic relationship with anemones as they use them for protection, and the clownfish eats the parasite within the anemone. All clownfish are born male but are hermaphrodites. They have the ability to change their sex to female, usually for mating, but once they change, it is not possible to change back. Their social circle is led by one dominant female, which is the largest fish. The second in charge is the largest male fish. If the female dies, then the dominant male will transition to being female, then the new largest male will become second dominant as a replacement. According to the National Aquarium, clownfish eat algae, zooplankton, worms, and small crustaceans.

Anemone

Anemone, as we learned before, are a big part of the clownfish lifestyle. Anemones do, however, have a life of their own. One other includes green algae. NatGeo says “in exchange for providing the algae safe harbor and exposure to sunlight, the anemone receives oxygen and sugar, the bi-products of the algae’s photosynthesis.” If jellyfish was a kind of coral, that’s what an anemone looks like—they are all actually related. Anemones come in the colors of the rainbow and have tentacle appendages and a base-like structure. They use their tentacles to sting and contract fish into their body cavity. They have one hole which leads to their gut, but that also means they have one way out if you know what I mean. They remarkably can weigh up to 440 pounds, and their mouths can open up to 2ft wide!

There are many other species that you will come across if you actually get to go snorkeling. Let me know what kinds of tropical creatures you wish I covered.

Gosh, my calves hurt

Looking for places to hike in the valley? Keep reading Nature Editor Hannah Hall’s list of favorite trails–from the most beautiful to the quickest! –Editor Sara Habibipour

By Hannah Hall, Nature Correspondent

In the desert, we are lucky to be surrounded by mountains. Not only do they make for great scenery, but climbing them makes for an excellent workout. There are so many trailheads in the desert, and they all have their unique qualities. Here are some versatile hikes I recommend.

Best Sunrise/Sunset

The Cross Trail in Palm desert is 2.3 miles long. This trail is well known, but you never know whether or not there will be many people on the trail. This is an out-and-back style trail, but right when you start the trail (go to the right, not up the street) there is a nice table with a lookout directly angled to watch the sunrise. Once you keep hiking this trail, if you keep going you will see a pad of cement with yin yang on it. It is always being graffitied with different colors, so it’s super cool to check out. There is a great spot to checkout the sunset. Although the view isn’t direct, it is flat and you can see all of the twinkling city lights.

Sunset View: Palm Desert Cross Trail

Most Beautiful

Tahquitz Canyon is a part of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians Reservation located in Palm Springs. The loop is 1.9 miles and is heavily trafficked. What makes this hike so unique is that there is a 60-foot waterfall within the trail! The water is really high and refreshing during the springtime. The Outdoor Club went on this hike when it was super-duper hot, and once we dipped in the water (we actually galloped in) we screamed and splashed with relief and joy. We were so cooled that the hike back was a breeze. I really recommend this hike for the beauty and the waterfall experience.

Outdoor Club @ Tahquitz

Quickest Trail

This trail is a 2.7 mile loop. It may seem long by the length of miles, but it only takes me an hour every time I do it. It is the Roadrunner and Chuckwalla trail. This trail is situated right behind Rancho Mirage City Hall. I like this trail because it sort of has a built-in warm-up incline, which I think is what makes this trail seem so easy. All I can say is the trail is super easy to follow, and you can even cut it short by walking back down the street instead of the other mountain. This hike also has a nice sitting area for a sunrise. What makes for a delightful surprise, during the winter time it has a Christmas tree set up, and you also get sick views of the snow-capped mountains from afar.

Climb above Rancho Mirage City Hall, and this will be holiday-time view.

So what are Moon and Rising signs?

May 28, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

After Amateur Astrologist Jesse’s last post, hopefully you now understand the details of your Sun sign. But, that’s not the only zodiac-related business that influences who you are. Read more to learn about your Moon and Rising signs–they can make all the difference. –Sagittarius Sun, Aquarius Rising, Pisces Moon Editor Sara Habibipour

By Jesse the Amateur Astrologist

Welcome back my celestially binded friends!

In my last post, I explained everyone’s Sun signs and what they mean. If you read the synopsis of your sign and thought, “That sounded kind of like me, but this was off,” don’t dismiss Astrology as a hoax like so many do. Your Moon and Rising signs also play a huge role in your personality.

So what is a Moon sign?

The moon moves very quickly around the sky. It only takes the moon about a month to travel through all the zodiac signs and spends only about 1 to 2 days in each sign. While your Sun sign can easily be found by the month and day of your birthday, your Moon sign is a bit harder to calculate. Your Moon sign can come down to the day, hour and even minute of your birth and where exactly you were born.

What does your Moon sign control?

While your Sun sign mainly controls your core personality traits and habits, your Moon sign controls how you feel things emotionally and your inner mood. It is the second most important influence on your sign. Don’t give up on Astrology just yet ‘cause learning your Moon sign might just blow your mind.

But there is also a third key factor as to who you are astrologically, and that factor is called your Rising sign.

So what is a Rising sign?

As previously explained, the Sun spends about 30 days in one sign and the Moon spends about 2 days in one sign. The Rising sign, also known as your Ascendant, is what sign is on the horizon at the exact time of your birth. Again, another reason that the exact time and place of your birth is extremely important in knowing your exact zodiac chart is because as the Sun and Moon are ever changing, so is your Rising sign.

So what does your Rising sign control?

Your Sun sign controls your core default personality, your Moon sign controls your inner emotional self, and your Rising sign controls your outward self and how people perceive you at first glance. It is how you present yourself as a person. Although not always as accurate compared to how you think people perceive you, ask a person what’s their first impression of you and compare their description to your Rising sign. See any similarities? Yea, I thought so.

I promised my readers something special last time, and here it is! If you email me the date, time and place of your birth, I will calculate your Sun, Moon, and Rising signs for you. Below will be summaries to come back and compare your results to. So, if you are interested in getting to know who you are through your Big 3 Signs, my email is jdenyer@student.pvs.org. I’m excited to help you all learn more about yourselves!

Aries Moon and Rising:

Moon Sign

Emotionally, Aries Moons can be quick to anger but also quick to cool. They surprisingly don’t hold grudges; although they forgive, they don’t necessarily forget. Sadness, as an emotion, is something Aries Moons will rarely let escape the confines of their mind. However, in private, it can be expressed through a need for solitude and alone time to process. Once processed, Aries Moons are back to their happy-go-lucky, positive selves.

Rising Sign

If you are an Aries Rising, chances are you come across to people as bold, confident, and opinionated. Depending on who is on the receiving end of your Aries Rising, people can see you as a bit obnoxious and over the top. You are seen as being fiercely competitive, sometimes to a fault. You are very instinctual and tend to leap before you look and usually don’t ask for permission. You are either the leader of the tribe or lead other parts of your life.

Taurus Moon and Rising:

Moon Sign

Though extremely hard-headed, Taurus Moons are known to be quite sensitive and loving by nature. They love very deeply and strongly and expect the same love back. This can make them be very possessive and controlling over the people they care for most. If they feel disrespected or betrayed in any way they are known to deeply repress the emotions and let them sort themselves out in the mind over time. They are not quick to act out of anger, however they are known to be passive-aggressive. They thrive off of security and comfort and emotionally seek that in partners.

Rising Sign

Taurus Risings are interesting. It’s like flipping a coin on how they will present themselves in certain situations. They can present themselves as being stern and confident. They can seem intimidating and even unapproachable. However, they also have a softer side that can present a loving and caring personality. They can be misinterpreted as being materialistic; however, they are actually just lovers of the material world and finer things.

Gemini Moon and Rising:

Moon Sign

Gemini Moons are known to get bored very easily whether it be with people or with their life in general. Problems that arise for them are dealt with by putting on their rose tinted glasses and they tend to just ignore their emotions until they become a huge issue that can no longer be ignored. This habit can usually lead them to trouble. Geminis are lovers but have a hard time showing it; however, they do feel the love very deeply. This again can lead them into troubled relationships. They are not very trusting of people and are extremely wary of others. However, they love to have fun, and, when they are happy, they are very outwardly happy and extroverted.

Rising Sign

Gemini Risings are very outgoing and friendly. They come across very welcoming and approachable and make friends easily this way. They seem extremely creative and love to live life to the fullest. However, they can seem very scatter-brained and unfocused. You can always usually find a good and welcoming friend in a Gemini Rising.

Cancer Moon and Rising:

Moon Sign

Cancer is ruled by the Moon, making them one of the most emotional signs. Due to the Moon’s constant and rapid changing, Cancer’s feelings tend to be all over the place, giving them the reputation for being somewhat moody. They feel very deeply in every way and relationships mean alot to them. Because they are so emotional and are easily hurt, they tend to also have a hard outer shell to protect those emotions. You will only get so many second chances from a Cancer Moon before you are lower than dirt in their eyes, so be careful how you treat one.

Rising Sign

Cancer Risings are extremely caring, warm, and nurturing individuals. They are usually the mom of the friend group. They love everyone until you spite them. You know the grudge will be never ending if you have wronged a Cancer Rising. They like things exactly how they want them and will stop at no cost and let no person get in their way to accomplish this.

Leo Moon and Rising:

Moon Sign

Being the kings and queens of extroversion, Leo Moons hardly feel the darker emotions. They are fierce leaders and love to keep their place at the top of the pyramid at all times. During times where Leo Moons feel those darker emotions, their knee-jerk reaction is to use over confidence and borderline conceitedness to boost their ego back up to its regular height. Overall, Leos are extremely positive and happy people who enjoy being the center of attention and life of the party.

Rising Sign

If a Leo Rising walks in the room, I guarantee you will know. With their vibrant style and flair Leo Risings are truly captivating. They love being the center of attention and will stop at nothing to achieve that status. They are very loyal friends and will do anything to help someone. Fierce lovers and extreme extroverts, Leo Risings will capture the attention of everyone around them and have a reputation for being “the loud ones.”

Virgo Moon and Rising:

Moon Sign

Virgos are highly intellectual beings and have little time for outward emotion. However, internally, they spend a lot of time over analysing situations and little things which can drive them a bit crazy and distract from things that are important. They tend to be very critical of themselves and picky. However they are emotionally the strongest when striving to better themselves.

Rising Sign

At first glance, Virgos come across as very organized, level headed, intelligent, and friendly. They are likely the person you would go to in a crisis moment, as they always seem to know exactly what to do. They have a deep rooted connection to Earth and much like it they are constantly evolving, never staying in the same rut for too long.

Libra Moon and Rising:

Moon Sign

Libras spend an enormous amount of time trying to keep their life and the people around themselves as harmonious and balanced as possible. They will likely put others’ wants and needs before themselves believing it will bring them balance, however it is just as important that they get what they want and need, as in the long run depriving themselves will only lead to unbalance and unhappiness. They then tend to become a bit bitter and snarky with others as Libra Moons feel that the other person got to be happy and now they don’t. It is best that Libra moons focus on themselves just as much as others to achieve their necessity for balance.

Rising Sign

Libra rising will always put up a positive front around people no matter what is going on below the surface. This comes from their want and need for everyone to be happy. Libra Risings are extremely pleasant and loving and will do anything for you. They can be extremely indecisive and will tend to put others’ needs before themselves. They are extremely social and always like to be in the know.

Scorpio Moon and Rising:

Moon Sign

Scorpio Moons feel emotions very deeply and tend to hide them very easily. Their emotions are extremely volatile and Scorpio Moons can change their opinions on a dime. When they are feeling dark emotions they tend to go quiet and into themselves which can make people suspicious of them. They have a tone of fire and will argue with anyone about something they are passionate about.

Rising Sign

Scorpio Risings tend to be very mysterious, quiet, and aloof at first glance. They always seem to be thinking which can sometimes scare people and make them suspicious. They are watchers and love to gather information. It might be hard to make friends with a Scorpio Rising at first because they are very guarded, but once you make friends with them, they will be loyal ‘til the end.

Sagittarius Moon and Rising :

Moon Sign

Sagittarius Moons are very good at concealing feelings. However, they are quite emotionally in touch with themselves. They are very balanced and tend to deal with their emotions quickly and directly, which is why they hardly ever make their way above the surface. They tend to not keep secrets very well because they hate the emotional burden of it and, in spilling a secret, will usually create more turmoil for themselves.

Rising Sign

Sagittarius Risings are known for their energetic and super friendly nature. They are easy to make friends with and love to go on adventures and explore the world. They love to learn about new things and find the truth to every story. They are almost always positive and friendly and are very easy to get along with. They are very outspoken and extroverted, usually making them the center of a friend group.

Capricorn Moon and Rising:

Moon Sign

Capricorn Moons are known for being creatures of solitude. They are very comfortable in their own company and require lots of alone time. People can easily be too much for a Capricorn, and after a day of being in a social situation, they are known to retreat back into their comfort zone in solitude. However, it is important that they not spend too much time in solitude, as they are likely to get sucked into a depressive state.

Rising Sign

Capricorn Risings are very mellow creatures who crave alone time. They can seem very shy and quiet and they are extremely focused on their own personal goals and greatness. They hold themselves and others to a very high standard and are constantly striving to achieve their new personal goals. Though not the most social butterflies, Capricorn Risings still make great friends and are very easy to talk to. Just don’t expect them to get too worked up over your drama.

Aquarius Moon and Rising:

Moon Sign

Aquarius Moons are known for seeming quite aloof and hiding their feelings. To them, showing emotion is a sign of weakness, and they would prefer to uphold their reputation of being sturdy individuals. They tend to deal with their feelings more in private. That is unless that feeling is anger, in which case, Aquarius Moons tend to have a spiteful tongue; if you are the source of that anger, I would look out.

Rising Sign

Aquarius Risings tend to march at the beat of their own drum. It is hard to tell an Aquarius Rising what to do, and they tend to be very individualistic and not a team player. They tend to be very concerned with themselves. However, they do make great friends as they are extremely loyal. If you ever give them a reason to distrust you, just know that they won’t cut you loose. but you will never be trusted again and grudges will be held until they die.

Pisces Moon and Rising:

Moon

Pisces are extremely in touch with their emotions and are not afraid to show it. They have extreme empathy and compassion for those around them and they are known to cry over silly things and seem very hyper emotional. They are extremely caring of others and love doing things for other people just out of the kindness of their heart. Sometimes they get a bad rep for being too sensitive.

Rising

Pisces Risings tend to come off very carefree and friendly. They are very caring and empathetic towards others. Due to this, it is extremely important that Pisces pick friends who understand their good intentions and wont walk all over them or take advantage of them. A Pisces Rising will help anyone in a bind. They are very mellow and easy going, and tend to let others make the plans. They are also known for having a goofy sense of humor that charms many.

I hope you can now have a much better understanding of who you are and what your Big 3 Signs mean. After all, it was all written in the stars! This will be my last blog post of the year, but have no fear, I will be back in full force as soon as next school year starts and have many exciting plans in store.

Have a lovely Gemini, Cancer, and Leo season everyone!

Love,

Jesse, your Aries Sun, Taurus Rising, Pisces Moon, Ameteur Astrologist

What’s yellow and slimy?

May 28, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

Blogger Hannah has some serious pride for her new school mascot, the banana slug. She dives into the scientific background of the species, even includes some fun facts.–Editor Elizabeth

by Hannah Hall, Nature Correspondent

This upcoming fall, I will be attending the University of California at Santa Cruz. And, you may be wondering why that is relevant. Well, our mascot is “yellow and slimy.” Our mascot is the Banana Slug!

The banana slug is a gastropod invertebrate (mucus secreting, spineless creature) that can usually be found in yellow, which is where they get their “banana” name from. They can also be seen in shades of brown, white and green—sometimes a speckled combination of multiple colors! Banana slugs can be found all over the Pacific Northwest from some areas in Alaska, all the way to Central California. They are native in forest habitats, and flourish in the moisture. In fact, their slime is based off of the moisture surrounding them. Their slime is actually crystallized. When the substance comes in contact with moisture it can absorb up to 100 times its size, which is what we then recognize as goopy slime. Their slime serves a few purposes. Firstly, it is protective. When predators try to eat the slug, the slime actually numbs their tongue, which can lend to their escape from the jaws of death. Secondly, it acts as a skin barrier. Their slime is practically moisture retaining lotion that prevents their skin from becoming dehydrated. Thirdly, it helps with moving. Yes, it helps with inching around—at their top speed of only 6.5 inches per-minute—but it also helps with the moving of their food. Oftentimes banana slugs will use their slime to push debris on them to their tail, so they can turn around and eat it off of themselves. And, speaking of food, they are pretty much nature’s compost bin. They are known as vegetarian decomposers that feed off of animal droppings and dying/dead plants such as fruit, moss, and mushrooms. Their waste then serves as nitrogen-rich fertilizer which is good for the forest floor.

You may be wondering how banana slugs reproduce. Banana slugs are in fact hermaphrodites, “which means they possess both male and female sex organs simultaneously” (NatGeo). This also means that as much as they have the opportunity to mate with others—“courting,” they can also mate with themselves. Although when they do mate with others, sometimes they have trouble….detaching….for lack of better terms. The University of Puget Sound states, “if they are unable to [detach,] one or both will finally start chewing and bite off the [sex] organ of the other slug. This behavior is called apophallation and seems unique to slugs.”

Summing up the basic facts about my new beloved mascot, hopefully you find the species as interesting as I do. #GoSlugs

Chicken Craziness

May 26, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

From chicken tenders to chicken sandwiches–Blogger Elizabeth comes through with the most recent chicken news.

By Elizabeth Shay

This past week has been cluck full of news involving the common poultry that we know and love: chicken. Here are three recent chick-entertaining stories!

Chicken Nugget Shenanigans

For many Americans, McDonald’s chicken nuggets are a nostalgic piece of childhood. But, the chain is popular internationally as well. And, sometimes, you really, really, really, need to satisfy your craving and will do anything to secure the goods. Take Rudi Batten from England, for example. The 22-year-old man has been sentenced to six years in jail according to authorities, for engaging in an armed robbery of a McDonald’s in Yate. Batten allegedly “took 50 pounds from a cash register before holding an imitation firearm to a store manager’s head and leading him to a safe” (Bristol Post). Then, he asked for the aforementioned chicken nuggets but had to settle for a double sausage McMuffin because at 7 a.m. the restaurant was only serving the breakfast menu. The day before the McDonald’s fiasco, Batten had also robbed a Miss Millie’s in the city, taking cash and fried chicken (WHDH in Boston). People do wild things for chicken!

Costco Chicken Sandwich

A Costco in Vancouver made waves with their entrance into the Chicken Sandwich War. The “Crispy Chicken Sandwich” made its debut on the food court menu at a Canadian Costco. The sandwich includes chicken and spicy mayo on a soft cheese bun, but is notably missing pickles. Costco fans have praised the new option, but some people are definitely missing the pickles. One thing to note is that Costco’s “Crispy Chicken Sandwich” is a whopping 810 calories, surpassing Popeye’s which has 699 and Chick-fil-A which stands at 460. Costco has not yet commented on whether the sandwich will make an appearance in the United States, so hopeful American shoppers just have to wait and keep an eye out!

Chicken Shortage

As demonstrated by the stories above, chicken is widely loved. However, according to CNN Business, the beloved bird is in short supply, and it turns out that Tyson’s roosters are partly to blame. Chicken volumes have been low because the roosters that the meat processor has been using for breeding are not meeting expectations. Donnie King, Tyson’s Chief Operating Officer and Group President of Poultry–yes, that’s a real position–said during an analyst call that “[They’re] changing out a male that, quite frankly,  [they] made a bad decision on.” This male is the reason for the “unexpected decline” in hatchings in this past year. Tyson made the decision to choose this type of chicken because of specific traits that improved the quality of offspring’s meat, but are switching back to the original roosters which lead to more eggs and higher hatch rates. Another reason for the decreased availability of chicken is actually the growing popularity of chicken sandwiches, causing restaurants to add chicken-based items to their menus. Finally, the Texas winter storm and Covid-19 outbreak negatively impacted production at plants. Maybe consider easing up on the chicken sandwiches for the time being.

That’s a wrap. I hope you have been thoroughly hen-tertained by the recent chicken news!

Status Report: Colombians in Protest

May 26, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

Blogger Evan writes about the current situation in Colombia and why people are protesting. He also explains why it is important and necessary that we protect the protestors. — Editor-in-Chief Roman Rickwood

By Evan Spry, Politics Editor

It has been over four years since the Colombian government signed a peace deal with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), ending a five-decade long conflict that affected every part of Colombian society. 2016 was supposed to be the start of a long and peaceful process of implementing the people’s ideas into the government with cooperation from the Colombian establishment. Unfortunately, broken promises on both sides have fostered the rise of the far-right in the government and dissent from the people on the streets. The current figurehead of this right wing movement in Colombian government is Ivan Duque.

Duque formerly served in the Colombian Senate where he opposed and condemned the peace agreement with the FARC (britannica.com). As a self described “extreme centrist,” Duque fits right into the Democratic Center, the right-wing political party he represents. This party’s main stance is its aggressive anti-rebel approach.

Unsurprisingly, this vehemently anti-rebel approach has led to a stagnation in the cooperation between former fighters made up of different rebel factions. And, with right-wing government and current poverty reminding Colombians why they rebelled in the first place, tension rose. As the boiling point was almost reached, COVID-19 hit, and everyone was forced indoors. The pandemic-related pause on the economy was destructive to the already wavering economic situation, causing more and more people to become impoverished. And, as soon as Colombians were allowed back on the streets, they went. But not to work, to protest. The poverty that many Colombians live in was exacerbated by a new tax law aimed at stimulating the economy. This new law would only raise taxes on basic goods and services such as fuel, public services, and pensions/wages. Obviously, this didn’t sit well with the average Colombian, so they took to the streets. Since the protests started on April 28th, thousands of demonstrators have participated in protests all around the country (apnews.com).

The Colombian government did end up repealing the controversial tax bill that raised prices on everyday commodities, but they didn’t fix the wider issue of poverty that many Colombians experience. This led people to continue protesting, which in turn led to more confrontations with the police and Colombian armed forces. Keep in mind, many of these policing forces were under the command of right-wing anti-communists that saw the protests as an act of rebellion. In order to stop the rebellion, these officials, like Ivan Duque, ordered the police to treat the protesters like rebels. This meant excessive use of force, police brutality, unlawful arrests, and even killings. According to Reuters, “Local advocacy group Temblores says 40 protesters have allegedly been killed by police, while Human Rights Watch said it has received 46 credible reports of protest deaths and verified 13” (reuters.com). Fortunately, amid all the unrest, certain communities have grown closer together. The third largest city in Colombia, Cali, has faced the brunt of the violence between protesters and security forces with local indigenous groups stepping in to support and protect the protesters. The support Colombians are providing for each other against the government has even inspired Colombian mayors including that of Cali to condemn the federal government’s actions and address the issues facing Colombians. According to Colombia Reports, “Mayor Jorge Ivan Ospina urged the president to visit Cali to address the ‘political problem of a national nature’ that has manifested itself most violently in Cali, which is also reporting food shortages.”

This fracturing of the government is showing us how serious the situation in Colombia is. If Ivan Duque really cared about the Colombian people, he would step down from office and let someone else (that is more competent) lead Colombia. Hopefully, the cooperation between local governments, activists, and indigenous groups will unite Colombia and lead it down a stable path. If not, the cycle of authoritarian right-wingers will stay in power, jeopardizing any hope of a prosperous Colombia.

Student Loan Debt, Its Effect on the American Economy, and If We Should Forgive it All

May 26, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

Blogger Jake writes about a costly epidemic crushing our nation, specifically putting a huge burden on young people who are fresh out of college with a mountain of student debt trying to survive in an increasingly expensive world.

By Jake Sonderman, Business Editor

As of the first quarter of 2021, total student loan debt is numbered at $1.74 trillion (fred.stlouisfed.org). The average student loan debt amount, for the 43.2 million people with student loan debt, is $39,351. The average interest on these loans is 5.8%; the average monthly payment is $393, and the average timeline to pay off the loans is 20 years. 15% of American adults have student loan debt, of whom 82.3% are above the age of 25 (educationaldata.org). In 2016, 3% of individuals 65 to 74 were still paying off student loan debt (washingtonpost.com). The primary cause of this is skyrocketing tuition rates, which have risen 183% since 1998, 3x faster than the rate of inflation (aei.org), second only to rising hospital service costs.

So how does student loan debt affect our economy?

First, it hurts the housing market. When adults have to pay monthly payments on a student loan, they are less likely to take out a mortgage on a house and add to their monthly bill. The Fed’s survey of consumer finances notes that student loan debt kept 400,000 individuals from home ownership. This contributed to 2% of the 8.8% drop in home ownership for those 20-40 from 2005 to 2014 (washingtonpost.com).

Student loan debt also stifles entrepreneurship. According to Prof. Karthik Krishnan of Northeastern University, individuals who graduate with $30,000 in student loans are 11% less likely to start a business (cnbc.com). This is due to of course a lack of capital because of the student loan, and because of difficulty obtaining credit to start a new business.

The Federal Reserve has also stated that it intends to do more research on the effect of student loan debt on credit later in life, and that preliminary data suggest that “higher student loan debt early in life leads to a lower credit score later in life” (washingtonpost.com). Ability to obtain credit not only has an effect on the housing market and entrepreneurship, but on the auto industry and other industries that rely on credit to sell their products.

All of this has led to calls by progressives such as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D) to forgive $50,000 of student loan debt. This call sounds very appealing at first glance, and forgiving this much debt would certainly give an adrenaline rush to the economy, but I don’t think it is a good idea, and I don’t think it is a very progressive idea.

Those with college degrees make substantially more money than those who don’t. As of 2020, high school graduates made a median salary of $38,792 a year, while college graduates with a bachelors made a median salary of $64,896 (Northeastern.edu). Student loan debt forgiveness is, in practice, a stimulus check for people with student loan debt. Student loan debt forgiveness would have an anti-robinhood effect, giving more money to those who make more money. This is also exacerbated by the fact that those with master’s and doctorate degrees make substantially more than those with a bachelor’s degree, and also have more student loan debt (educationdata.org). This is why it almost surprises me that some progressives are pushing so hard for this, as it would certainly contribute to more income inequality. And, even if we did shell out the trillions of dollars to do this, it’s still treating the symptoms rather than the problem, as college would still cost the same–and students would continue to take out loans to pay for it.

This doesn’t mean there is nothing we can do to fix the problem. These solutions are solely my opinion, so take them with a grain of salt. The root cause of rising student debt is rising tuition rates. This is simply caused by rising demand over the past decades. The New York Fed has also reported that for every dollar of federal loan expansion and Pell Grants, tuition increases by 55-65 cents (forbes.com). This means that expanded federal loan programs and grants are essentially putting gasoline on the fire. There’s not an obvious solution or an easy fix to this problem because having high demand for college is a good thing and having federal support to pay for it is also good. In my mind, there are two options that aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive. One, mandate that public universities justify tuition increases and require justification not include non-teaching staff and substantial wage increases for that small number of administration officials at the top. Two, roll back federal grants and loan programs. I know this sounds totally backwards, since these two things are entirely for the purpose of helping more people go to college. But, if federal grants and loans drive up tuition, even for those receiving grants, then doesn’t that defeat the entire point? The rollback of these programs would of course have to be followed by regulation to ensure that predatory private loans don’t take the place of federal loans.

This issue is very real to us seniors graduating and continuing on to college. To those who aren’t yet seniors, my advice would be to strongly consider scholarships for a college that might not be your first choice versus taking out loans for your first choice. Choosing a college is incredibly hard and also important, but name and size really aren’t as important as they always seem to be. I hate to say it, but it’s not just about what college you go to, it’s about what you do while you’re there.

I Love Ice Cream

May 24, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org 1 Comment

This week Blogger Elizabeth wrote about her love for ice cream. Her flavors are tempting, but you might have to go to Vegas or Singapore to indulge. (Hint: One flavor has just come available at your local Trader Joe’s.)

By Elizabeth Shay, Food & Drink Editor

Chocolate. Cookie dough. Strawberry…. These are some of the most common flavors of my favorite dessert: ice cream. These flavors are popular, and rightfully so, but there are many underrated types of ice cream as well. Here are three flavors of ice cream that I believe deserve more appreciation.

Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip

Not to be confused with blackberries, black raspberries are a special variety of the more common red raspberry that is native to North America. Black raspberries are very difficult to find, as they are only available for a few weeks during midsummer. They are similar in flavor to their red counterparts, but are described as sweeter (Healthline).

I first had black raspberry chocolate chip ice cream at a Graeter’s Ice Cream store at Caesars Palace Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Graeter’s is a Midwestern-based ice cream chain, founded in 1870. I was drawn to the vibrant mauve color of the ice cream sitting on the other side of the cool glass case, took a chance, and fell in love. This flavor, when done right, is perfectly sweet and creamy. Graeter’s remains my favorite brand that makes black raspberry chocolate chip ice cream, although the grocery store tubs never taste quite the same as my first experience in Vegas. Graeter’s is pretty much nowhere to be found at our local grocery stores, so if you are looking to try this flavor, Talenti makes a decent alternative.

Black Sesame

Black sesame seeds are primarily produced in Asian countries. These small, flat, oily seeds are grown in the fruit pods of the Sesamum indicum plant, which has been cultivated for thousands of years (Healthline). In addition to containing more nutritional value than their white counterpart, black sesame seeds also have a stronger flavor and more crunch. The flavor profile of black sesame seeds is characterized as being earthy and nutty, with a smoky, almost peppery flavor and a hint of bitterness. These seeds are no longer being used solely as a garnish, and are being incorporated into a variety of desserts, including cakes, donuts, ice creams, and more (Los Angeles Times).

Our local Creamistry ice cream shop in Palm Desert featured black sesame ice cream while they were still in business. This was one of my favorites out of all their offerings. I have not actively searched for this particular flavor of ice cream in grocery stores in the desert, but there are many brands that create black sesame ice cream which are available in Asian grocery stores.

Ube

Ube is a purple yam that originates from the Philippines. It has an even sweeter, more mellow taste than its orange relative with undertones of nuttiness and vanilla. Ube is a staple in Filipino desserts and has made its way into mainstream U.S. culture over the last three years. A large factor in ube’s popularity is its vibrant purple color that lends itself well to photography–especially important in a world addicted to social media (Real Simple).

I believe that ube ice cream deserves more recognition in the United States. My love for this flavor began after first trying soft serve ube ice cream from a McDonald’s in Singapore. Ube ice cream can be widely found in Asian grocery stores. Trader Joe’s has since come out with a line of ube-flavored products, including a mochi pancake and waffle mix, and, of course, ice cream! These products are seasonal items, so be on the lookout at your local Trader Joe’s to see when they are back in stock. Wait! I just checked. They are in stock right now! Go!

Have you tried any of these flavors of ice cream? What flavor do you think is underrated? Let us know in the comments!

How Do We Know We Exist?

May 24, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

For this week, Blogger Sara wrote about and questioned our existence. She examines “How we know we are who we say we are.” She reminds us all to question everything and to always be skeptical. — Editor-in-Chief Roman Rickwood

By Sara Habibipour, Philosophy Editor

This may seem like a pretty obvious question. “Of course I exist,” you may think; “I breathe. I eat. I sleep. I laugh. I love.” Your senses are what help you perceive the world. After all, you’re using your sight to read this article right now. Your senses don’t deceive you…except for when they do. You’re walking downtown, and you think you see a friend, but, in fact, you don’t know the person. Or, you shoot a basketball, thinking that you have the perfect angle to make that 3-pointer, and you shoot the ball so far from the net that it’s embarrassing.

In this moment, you know you’re reading. You know the electronic device you’re holding is real. You know the place where you’re reading is real. When you’re awake and active, you know you’re existing. But, when you aren’t, say, when you’re dreaming, you don’t know whether or not you’re existing. How can you prove you’re not dreaming?

Can you even prove that you exist? Where would you begin? If reality doesn’t exist, then you can’t possibly exist. And, can you prove reality? Maybe all of reality, time, color, numbers, and shapes are false. Renée Descartes would go as far to ask you if you can even disprove the idea that an evil genius has tricked you into believing reality is real. This makes me ask… “Could this ‘evil genius’ be God?”

But, you can’t be nothing if you think you’re something. Hmmm… maybe. Thinking you’re something has to count, right? Ever heard, “I think therefore I am?” Descartes would say that simply believing you exist counts.

So, let’s say we do exist. That begs the question, “Are we minds with bodies, or bodies with minds?”

There’s a thing called the “Rubber Hand Illusion.” There was an experiment done where a dummy hand was placed in front of participants, and their real hand was hidden behind a screen. Both are simultaneously stroked with a paintbrush. Yet, when asked what hand they felt the paintbrush stroking, the participants pointed in the direction of the dummy hand. What this experiment proved was that our minds have a lot more control over our bodies than we think.

So what does it even mean to be a body with a mind and vice versa? A body with a mind would be a physical body that only experiences thoughts and emotions as a result of biochemical interactions in the brain. A mind without a body would have some non-physical presence, a soul maybe, that could live outside of your physical body, directing your actions.

Well, that in itself brings up the question of whether the body and the mind are separate entities. Looking back to what Descartes said, even if all of our physical sensations were just a Matrix-like hallucinatory dream, our mind and thoughts would still be there. This, for Descartes, was enough to prove our existence; the conscious mind is something separate from the material body, and the mind is what forms our identity. Initially thinking about this, that would make sense. If I was simply a physical body with no thoughts, feelings, or emotion, would I even be Sara? I don’t think so. I have a personality which makes me distinctly me. But, then that makes me ask why that even is. How am I able to have a personality?

Well, science can help with answering that. Decades of neuroscience research suggests that our bodies and our physical senses are deeply integrated within the activity in our brains. All of the biochemical processes and reactions that occur in our brains form our consciousness.

With all that said, I think I’m with science on this one. The Rubber Hand Illusion experiment just shows us how easily our senses can deceive us. But, just because we can’t always rely on our senses, I don’t think that means our mind is a separate entity from our body. If our mind was in total control over our body, then couldn’t that just mean that we could imagine our existence away? Perhaps our bodies and minds aren’t separate. Perhaps they together form our existence.
