Nothingness: A Poem Inspired by Cormac McCarthy’s The Road

Dark.

Cold.

Bleak.

Nothingness.

That’s all that ever was.

All that ever will be.

All else is just distraction.

The window you look out of and the images on television are no different.

Fiction and fantasy.

Masks of darkness.

But nothing’s really there.

It’s just a second away from destruction.

Your mother, your father, your greatest friends–all of us.

We are nothing.

Death’s Messengers–A Fairy Tale Re-Telling

May 10, 2018 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

Graphic by Harlow Berny

Retold by Harlow Berny

Centuries ago, in a long forgotten kingdom, a giant was walking through a mountain pass, when suddenly a female figure cloaked in white jumped out before him and shouted, “Stop! Walk no further!”

“What?” bellowed the giant, “Does this fragile pebble try to block my path? What does it think it is?”

“I am Death,” answered the figure, “and your time has come, as it comes for all.” But, upon hearing this, the giant grew infuriated and raised his fist to the sky. Before Death could retaliate, the giant had crushed her with a devastating blow. Seeing Death on the ground, the giant laughed and continued on.

What will happen, thought Death, if I just stay here on the ground? No one will die, and the world will become so full that people will not have enough room to merely stand side by side. They will not be able to grow food to eat, not be able to sleep, and not be able to avoid disease. Despite this, they will not die, and thus will be condemned to eternal pain and suffering in a new hell.

As Death lay on the ground, lost in thought, a young and healthy man came along the road, singing as he gazed at the forest below. As he did so, he glanced upon Death, and rushed to her aid, leaning her against a nearby rock and giving her water from his canteen.

Once she had finished drinking, she softly spoke. “Would you happen to know who I am, kind man?”

“No,” he answered, glad that she had recovered.

“I am Death, the one who visits all at the moment of their passing. I can spare no one, and can make no exception–but I am grateful for the kindness you have shown me today. I promise that I shall send you messages before I come to take you from this world.”

“Well,” said the man, “there is something gained from knowing when you will come. If anything, I shall certainly have many years before you visit me again!” He and Death went their separate ways, both grateful for the encounter. The man, however, did not remain healthy for long, as he soon fell bedridden with a violent fever which took away his sleep. Despite the grim prospect that this sickness presented, the man stayed confident that he would live through it, as Death had yet to send her messengers. As he had predicted, he recovered quickly and went on in life merrily. That is, until a week after he had become healthy again, someone tapped his shoulder and whispered his name.

“….H–l-w -e-ny….” The man spun around and was shocked to find Death herself standing behind him. “The time has come for you to leave this world and move to the other.”

“What?” shouted the man. “Did you not tell me that you would send your messengers to warn me of your coming? I have seen none, yet here you stand.”

“Silly man,” Death said, “has fever not come to remind you of me? Has not the cracking of your bones in the morning, the aching tooth in your mouth, and the darkness of the night reminded you of your skeleton decomposing? Furthermore, has not my brother Sleep reminded you of me every night, as you lay in bed as you will lie in your coffin?”

Hearing all of this, the man saw how Death had made a fool of him. But, it was not anger that he felt, nor was it sadness. He smiled and walked side by side with Death, content that his life had not ended with blood, but with joke.

Compiled by Lyn Gweeny and Torti Linee

In the news our world seems to be filled with misery and suffering. But, our world can be  filled with beauty, joy, and innovation. There is always a glimmer of hope in the hopeless moments even if they come at the end.

This post is not about that. This post is about laughing at people’s stupidity. Sometimes people are delightfully dumb and silly. The following phrases and clauses were heard in the halls and classrooms of the Upper School. Enjoy.

“So… we’ll go ahead and make Beyonce our puppet queen of all of the island nations.”

“Are cribs what people… live…in…?”

“EVERYONE knows Finland is a front!”

“MOM, IT’S NOT A PHASE; THIS IS WHO I AM.”

“It’s like, windy outside, the air it’s like BLOWING.”

“Let’s just start by pushing Africa right up against India and Europe and… that’s how we’ll start recreating Pangea.”

“Aaaannd that’s our ten-step model of how to completely take over the world!”

“What do you want from me, PEASANT?”

“My closet is my SAFE SPACE, BELLA!”

“People with forehead wrinkles are subordinate to people who don’t! It’s just science.”

“Mme Mulé, you’re like the Hoover Dam.”

“Ummm… well, he is from West Virginia.”

“Are you knighting him or beating him? I’ve seen The Crown!”

“Students saying ridiculous things??? Pfffft NEVER!” *note: There is a possibility that this might be sarcastic.

“I like to compile birthdays.”

“Being around you is like having a laughtrack” “hahahahahahahaha”

“Exploding things calms you down?!

“It hurts to be stupid.”

“Okay, dude let’s make ASB the People’s Democratic Republic of Palm Valley School. PDRPVS.”

A Power Outage

May 9, 2018 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

By Mel N. Colley

We all experience

loss and

heartbreak,

which are so easily generated.

Many things

can be lost

that would shatter a heart:

A job

that was desperately needed,

in order to help a hospitalized mother;

A house

torn apart by a ravaging storm

that no one saw coming

and no one could stop;

A beloved pet

who was the only joy in

a lonely woman’s life;

A child

whose depression

a single mother failed to see;

A best friend

who went to the hospital for a stomach ache

when it was so much worse;

A father

who was killed

by a stray bullet from a distant gun;

And you,

who was the light of my life,

then the power went out.

First Words–Revisited

May 7, 2018 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

By Claire Jenkins

According to Psychology Today, “If the eyes are the window to the soul, then words are the gateway to the mind.” The words people choose to define things often reveal a lot about the person. When we think, we only think in verbs and nouns (Psychology Today). Other words such as adjectives and adverbs are added in when we form our thoughts into spoken words. The words others use when speaking or writing provide a way to observe the characteristics and the emotions of these individuals.

A while back I listed off words to a select pool of Palm Valley students and recorded their first-word reactions. Then, I came back and listed the same words to the same people, but this time they had a chance to think about their responses, and the word they felt fit the best was recorded. Here are their reflected-upon responses:

Female

transformative, complex, lips, human, children, woman, rights, Iron Man (think about it: the sign for iron is Fe)

Male

surprising, tiring, leaves, human, female, man, blue, mailman

Smart

overrated, determination, you, understanding, well-informed, brain, books, wise

Dumb

disregarded, growth, me, speaking, stupid, brick, mud, silent

Future

complicated, far, blue, bleak, work, time-machine, gifts, Star Wars

Past

dependent, ignorance, unsuccessful, civilization, history, dinosaur, emptiness, history

Present

confusing, wasted, Claire, existence, now, Santa, thoughts, 2018

Alone

peace, rest, white, sensitive, pondering, corner, pillow, wilderness

Community

bond, love, people, people, family, homes, garden, civilization

What would psychologists say about these eight people? What do you say?

By Heywood U. Cuddleme

I don’t understand

why I miss you so much.

Maybe it was the

cuddles

that we would sneak

out of the view of

judging eyes.

Or the looks we would

give each other

almost as if

we could read each other’s

mind.

But then

suddenly

you started to

care.

Less

and

less.

Almost as if

you were bored?

But it couldn’t end like that though, could it?

Yes.

And you were too afraid to

admit it.

To me?

Or to yourself?

Both?

You shattered me.

A part of me will always

break

a little inside

when I think of you.

But I don’t wish to reverse time.

I don’t wish to go back

and fix what you broke.

I don’t want what we had.

I want someone who cares for me

even when I don’t.

Vrae–A Poem

May 3, 2018 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

By Anne

Have you ever woken up?

Have you ever slept?

Do you know what you want?

Do you mind regret?

Would you rather forget it all?

What would you have done?

If you could, would you do it again?
