Palm Valley’s Embarrassing Stories

May 18, 2022 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

By Ani Madanyan

Have you ever told a joke and nobody laughed? Or been waved at and thought it was towards you, but it was for the person behind you? Embarrassment–I hate it. Let’s ask people what their most embarrassing stories are because as much as I hate it, they sure are funny.

As our first story-teller, we have Lilah Nick:

“In 5th grade, I was in a tap dance for a dance performance called Hot Chocolate. In the beginning of the dance we had to stand in one big line facing the audience, and I was in the front. This meant that I had to lead everyone out when we were placed on stage. On the first performance of it, I started walking out and told the girl behind me to follow, and she said, ‘Okay’ and started to follow behind me, and then she stopped before leaving the wings, and I didn’t realize. So, I was the only person standing on stage, and I turned around and saw no one there, and the whole audience started laughing, and I was so mad and embarrassed.”

Lilah Nick, Sophomore

Lilah decided to share two, so here’s the next one:

“In mock trial, I was super unprepared and was writing my cross examination questions right before the trial. It ended up going super well, and I was excited to do my closing because I thought it was super good. Once the defense finished, the judge asked, “Prosecution, are you ready for your rebuttal?” and I wanted to die right then. I had NO IDEA there was a rebuttal, and I was just sitting there wide eyed and so scared. I was so close to just saying, ‘Our other attorney will be giving that’ and throw Luke under the bus. I ended up doing it, but I messed up so much. It was just so bad, but I still got MVP for that round.”

Lilah

Next up, Sienna Price:

“When we were on holiday in Italy, like always my dad thinks he knows the directions to everywhere. So we were driving down the street and turned down this smaller alley, not knowing it was market day! Streets in Italy are small anyway, and with market stalls on either side of the road, it does not leave much road to drive. All the Italian market sellers started shouting and waving their hands at the car as my dad knocked down a few market stalls! It was one of the most embarrassing days in my life.”

Sienna Price, 8th Grade

Next Up Abby Assefa:

“Last year CSF held the Valentine’s Day Vignette, so my friends and I decided to do a little karaoke moment. We decided to perform L.O.V.E. song while spelling out love with our bodies. When we performed the song, we literally spelt love backwards and no one knew the words to the song. Right after we were done, a student that was in our group coughed into the microphone without wearing a mask. It was definitely a moment.”

Abby Assefa, Freshman

A Sit-Down with Hambik, from a Sisterly Point of View

March 22, 2022 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

Ani’s interview is part of an ongoing thebirdonfire endeavor to present the graduating seniors of the PVS Class of ’22.

By Ani Madanyan

My brother, Hambik Madanyan, might be a little…strange. Some think he’s funny; some think he’s loud, and some just can’t figure him out. What goes on inside that strange brain? I think my brother is suffering from senioritis. Let’s get to know him better…

Hambik, how would you describe yourself?

“As a very outgoing and happy person.”

What’s your favorite thing about high school? What are you going to miss the most from high school?

“My favorite thing about school is the people I’ve encountered and all the relationships I’ve formed here at PVS. I’m going to miss my friends the most. Though I haven’t been here for a while, I feel like I am right where I belong.”

What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re bored?

“I usually just play games, watch shows, and talk to my friends.”

What’s your favorite class/subject?

“My favorite class is biology because I like how it challenges me.”

What’s your dream university?

“UCLA!”

Sounds like Hambik has a pretty boring life…Let’s ask the juicy questions…

Hambik, who’s the funniest friend in your group?

“The queen–Sarah Habibipour.”

What do you fear the most, and why?

“Failure because I hate not being able to finish something I started.”

What was the last lie you told?

Hambik seems to be stuttering here…Let’s ask him again. HAMBIK…when was the last time you lied? (my mom’s in the room…. this is about to be crazy)

“I haven’t told any lies today-uh.”

Hambik, is this the lie?

“No response.”

I’ll take that as a yes.

Anyways, let’s get back to the basics. What’s your favorite sport?

“Basketball or golf.”

What’s your favorite food ever?

“Hot wings.”

He didn’t seem to stutter.

What’s your biggest pet peeve?

Hambik and Ani . . . a few years ago

“When people think they’re better than you.”

Ani: YOU ARE LITERALLY LIKE THAT!

Hambik: “But I hate when others do it.”

Strange…

Hambik… What‘s the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done?

“Where do we start? Um, probably when I ripped my pants in front of the whole school.”

Interesting.

Final question, are you happy or sad to be leaving PVS? Are you scared of college?

“I’m both happy and sad. I’m happy because I’m moving onto new experiences. But I’m sad because I have to leave the old ones behind.”

Wow. What a boring life. Just kidding. I think my brother has . . . potential.

Liar Liar Birds on Fire

March 16, 2022 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

By Ani Madanyan, Social Observer & Communicator

Have you ever wondered if someone was lying to you? I personally hate liars, and there have been cases where I wondered if someone was telling me the truth or not. What if you could tell if someone was lying? Oh this is about to go down…

Body Language

“Liars tend to use gestures with their hands after they speak as opposed to during or before a conversation,” says Tracy Brown (author of seven books, professional speaker, and business leader). “The mind is doing too many things including making up the story, figuring out if they’re being believed and adding to the story accordingly,” she adds. In other words, “Normal gesturing that might normally happen just before a statement happens after the statement” (time.com). When people lie, they flip their palms away from you. It’s a signal that they are holding something back, aka the truth. “They may put them in their pockets or even slide them under the table.” Some people tend to rock their body back and forward, or itch themselves. They fidget with their hands, legs, and face. When people fidget it shows that they are nervous. For example, when they shake their legs or cross their arms–this is a Red Flag (time.com). These are worthy measurements of a liar, but personally when I look for a lie I stare the speaker straight in the eye, and I just know if they’re lying or not. It might be my superpower…

Facial Expressions

I always thought that when someone looks to the left, it means they’re lying. But, this rumor is surprisingly wrong. Livescience.com says that you cannot sense a liar from where they look (livescience.com). However, when people fidget with their mouth (bite lips, lick lips) this could show that they’re holding back the truth. Most people get either really sweaty or really dry. This is why they lick their lips. Some people get dry in their eyes and this is what causes them to squint or blink excessively (psychologytoday.com). I know for a fact that I’m not a good liar, so you can tell by the look on my face if I’m lying or not. I bite my lips, bat my eyes, and stutter. Is this transparency good or bad? Not sure.

Voice

When people are anxious, the muscles in their vocal cords may tighten as an automatic response to stress, resulting in a high-pitched voice. Some people get voice cracks when they lie (I’m guilty of doing this). People tend to clear their throat or cough out of nervousness or discomfort. Some people try TOO hard to convince the other person so they use phrases such as “I swear” or “honestly.” When people stutter or say “uh, um, like” this is another Red Flag you’re confronting a liar (time.com). Most people also repeat the questions that they were asked. They do this to think of a lie in their head, or simply just because they are nervous. For example, “When did this happen?” “When did this happen? Well, uh, I…” Keep this in mind when interrogating people. Personally, when I lie, my voice tenses up and I get SO nervous.

I’m not sure if I ruined friendships or relationships or fixed them here, but either way, you’re welcome. Now, you can easily detect a lie in your friends and loved ones, unless you’ve got a manipulator on your hands. But that’s a lesson for another time…

Why Coachella Valley is the Perfect Vacation Spot

March 9, 2022 by szachik@pvs.org 1 Comment

By Locals Ani Madanyan and Oliver Martinez

Ani moved to Palm Springs two years ago. She considers herself a local now. But, she started out as a tourist. She’s been coming to the Coachella Valley since she was little. Hence, she knows good touristy spots. Beyond the hotel rooms and swimming in the shallow, heated pools, she knows we all love an adventure. Blogger Oliver embraces more the comforts of home, but he’s got recommendations of places to take desert visitors.

Ani  Recommends The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway.

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is a fast journey into the mountains that will take you out of the desert heat. Mount San Jacinto, which towers above Palm Springs, is 10,000 feet above sea level (planetware.com). The Tramway has the world’s largest rotating aerial tram cars. It’s definitely exciting to go from the scorching hot pool to snow on a mountain within one half-hour tram ride. The views are spectacular, even a little scary. The Tram, built in Chino Canyon, has been around a while. Its inaugural ride was way back in September 1963.

Oliver Recommends staying at home. He says it’s a great place to go.

But, if you must get out, go visit the windmills. The windmills are a great part of Palm Springs, and you can’t miss them. According to planetware.com, the Banning Pass is one of the windiest places on earth. It is harsh, but picturesque. The windmills make for dramatic photos as sunset.

Ani also recommends local hiking.

Hike to a waterfall! How fun is that? I personally love to go on hikes because I know that there is a pot of gold at the end of it (the pot of gold is the waterfall). The Indian Canyons, which are at the south end of Palm Springs, are the perfect place to go hiking.

Palm Canyon is a fifteen-mile-long canyon full of waterfalls and the famous palm trees–the indigenous Washingtonia. There’s also the Andreas Canyon. You can drive directly into the canyon and grab a table by the water. “It’s a great place for picnicking,” says Ms. Zachik. The canyons are also known for having lovely birds all around. People often go bird watching. It’s also a beautiful place to see animals such as deer, snakes, and all other sorts of animals. “The hawks up there are really cool,” Ms. Zachik adds.

Lastly, we have Tahquitz Canyon. This Indian Canyons is located all the way up Ramon Road when you drive toward the mountain. At the end of the designated hike, there is a 60-foot-tall waterfall. There are guides, theaters showing documentaries about the canyon, and artifact displays. Adult admission costs $12.50 per person, while an entrance fee of $6 applies for each child. Kids 5 and younger and active military members can visit for free (planetware.com).

Oliver’s final recommendation is The Living Desert.

The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens has plenty of animals from all over the world! There are giraffes, mountain lions, zebras, cheetahs, wild dogs, and a lot more! There are also lights at certain times of the year, and it makes the whole place look even more beautiful. “Glow in the Park” occurs from March 27 to April 29, 6:30-10:00 p.m. The Living Desert is a great place for families with a lot of attractions for everyone. You can even get married there.

What are you waiting for? Invite friends and family to the Coachella Valley! Tell them to bring bathing suits because even though it’s March, it’s always pool time!

Coachella Valley Ghost Stories for the Dark

March 1, 2022 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

Have you ever seen a ghost? There may be more paranormal presences in the Coachella Valley than you once thought. Ani Madanyan goes into detail on some stories of ghosts all around the valley and what she reveals is . . . chilling. – Editor Luke Sonderman

By Ani Madanyan

Palm Springs…It’s a perfect vacation spot. The pools, the sun, the heat, but what if I told you the desert is maybe a little haunted with … BOO! . . . Ghosts. They are my biggest fear. I’ve heard some local spooky stories. Let’s get into them.

Photo taken by Palm Springs Paranormal Investigation Team as seen in The Coachella Valley Independent.

This is a picture of the La Quinta Resort, the La Casa hideaway. The Palm Springs Paranormal Investigation Team checked out the spirits at the resort. The Coachella Valley Independent writes that the paranormal group had sightings of a “figure of a mysterious woman, cloaked in a white gown, gliding along the pathways of this local resort.” Also, The Coachella Valley Independent has hotel staffers describing “A mysterious tall man with a hat . . . wandering those same halls” (Coachella Valley).

This resort has been open since 1926, so it has lots of history. Donnie Thompson–ghost hunter, documentarian, and lead investigator of the paranormal team–went in for a checkup. Here’s a spooky video of a ghostly figure walking down the pathway that comes from the resort’s camera. The paranormal team wanted to release this video to the media, so here it is.

Donnie and his partner Gloria left this building alone because after interacting with the ghosts, they realized that they intended no harm. Phew!

Blog member and PVS student, Lilah Nick also has a local spooky story.

“I live in the mountains of Palm Springs, and, every so often, like once every two months, I hear a really loud scream that’ll go on for a few minutes coming from the mountains. I know it’s not a coyote because I hear them too. These screams have voice cracks. This is how I know they’re not coyotes; they have a sense of fear. It’s really weird, and the pitch changes a lot, but most of the time it sounds like a man screaming for help.”

Lilah Nick hasn’t done anything about this, besides hide under her blanket and sleep with one eye open…

Senior Jesse Denyer shares her experience with a ghost.

“One day I was home alone hanging out in my backyard, when I got a notification that my Amazon package was delivered. I went through the back sliding glass door, through the living room, and out the front door down to my gate to pick up the package. There was no wind that day, and I am 100% sure I left the door open, as I was going to turn around and come right back. I turn around, and the front door is closed. I assume it just closed by itself, but when I try to open it, it won’t budge almost like it was locked. My door has a deadbolt lock on it, and it’s also a little broken, so in order to lock it you have to jiggle it and put your whole body weight on it. There’s no way it could be locked. I just assumed it got stuck on the rug right next to the door. I walked around my driveway into my backyard and noticed that the sliding glass door was also closed AND LOCKED. Again I am completely home alone, and I know for a fact that I left it open. I took the screen off my kitchen window and crawled in to discover that my front door was deadbolt locked shut and my sliding glass door was also locked. I was so scared I didn’t know what to do with myself. I waited anxiously in my kitchen for my mom to come home. To this day I can’t explain.”

Susan Smith, former Tram employee, has the last ghost story for us.

“One of the old GM’s (general managers) roams the mountain top lodge and can be found at the bar having his favorite drink.” (She can’t remember what kind.) Nighttime Tram employees say this ghost is seen “wearing his infamous golfing hat.” That’s how they know it was him!

Chills. That’s all I have to say.

Oreos: The Wonder-Filled Cookies

February 2, 2022 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

This week Ani Madanyan gives us her ratings on the well-known cookies, Oreos. Oreos come in more variations than most of us can identify. She tells us which of these Oreo cookies are the best and which ones to avoid. – Editor Abigail Horwitt

By Chef Ani

Oreos are the best snack. Either dip them in milk, or eat a whole family pack alone by yourself. Either way, they’re delicious. But, which flavor is the best? All of them are extremely tasty, but today we’ll find one that stands out. Don’t get offended, these are my opinions, and if you disagree over this very important issue, talk about it in the comments. After writing this blog, I ate 17 Oreos…. needless to say, talking about Oreos makes you hungry for Oreos.

The Original Oreo

I can eat a whole family pack of these. They’re so light and packed with flavor. I personally love these so much, and I would say that you could never get tired of them. Either dip them in milk, or if you’re lactose-intolerant like me, just eat them plain.

Overall, I give original Oreos a 9.5/10.

The Golden Oreo

These are super tasty as well. Instead of a chocolate cookie, it tastes almost like a graham cracker/sugar cookie. I wouldn’t say these are my favorite. They’re too sweet, but sometimes I go through a Golden Oreo phase where I eat 20 of them in one sitting.

Overall, I give Golden Oreos a 7/10.

Dark Chocolate Oreos

These are my least favorite Oreo cookies. I personally hate dark chocolate because it’s too bitter. The dark chocolate with the chocolate cookie is way too much chocolate, and it’s also way too bitter. This cookie deserves to be locked up in prison. It tastes bland and bitter, and not even milk can fix it.

Overall, 3/10.

Oreo Cakesters

These are the BEST Oreos ever. They are more like cake than cookie, but they are so fluffy, and they taste like cookies-and-cream milkshake. This is the best Oreo ever invented. This is definitely my favorite.

Overall, I give Oreo Cakesters a 10/10.

These are just a few of the flavors. Out of all flavors, I would still pick the Oreo Cakesters. They’re soft and delicious. These cookies are HEAVEN. Although the Original Oreos and the Oreo Cakesters were almost a tie, I had to go with the fluffy Oreo masterpiece–Oreo Cakesters. Oreo Cakesters were discontinued for TEN YEARS, but, thankfully, they are back in 2022. That’s how we know it’s going to be a good year!
