Wake Up

May 28, 2020 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

The differences of waking up during quarantine vs. before quarantine:

By: Chelsea

Under quarantine–

  • You don’t have to worry about getting up to go to school anymore;, you can sleep in until the class starts.
  • You feel too lazy to get up, so you decide to stay in bed until classes start online.
  • You don’t have to eat your breakfast anymore because you don’t waste energy running around the school campus anymore.
  • You can be half awake when the chat starts.
  • Your lack of energy to do things will make you bed-ridden all day.

Before quarantine–

  • You have to get up after your alarm wakes you, or else you’ll be late for school.
  • If you are too lazy to get up….well, you don’t have much of a choice but to get up to go to school or else you’ll miss a whole day of class.
  • You really need to have breakfast before school or else you won’t have much energy for the entire morning.
  • You can be half awake during classes in school, unless there’s a test due at the end of the class.
  • Even if you are lacking energy, you still have to drag yourself to the end of the day.

I think we can all relate to this to some degree.

Apocalypse Survival Kit!

April 30, 2020 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

By: Chelsea

No matter if it is a zombie apocalypse, nuclear outbreak, global pandemic or asteroid strikes, we all need some tips to survive these difficult times. Well, you found just the right post to help you do exactly that!

Water

Keeping bottled water (at least two 8-packs) in your garage is essential during the apocalypse. Water is the one thing that you cannot live without, along with food.

Canned food

Having canned foods in your storage would be essential as well, especially if the situation arises where you cannot go out to buy stuff. Gather cans as much as possible.

Gas mask (nuclear outbreak)
Gas masks are needed during a nuclear warfare since there’s radiation in the air. You should wear a gas mask no matter where you are, even at home if your house is close to the nuclear active zone.

Weapon

Having weapons on hand is extremely helpful during a zombie apocalypse. Usually having the deadier the weapons are better because you are going to knock some zombie head off.

Facemask

Facemasks are important during a pandemic, especially when some types of virus are carried in the air. Putting facemasks on helps to decrease the air particles that are coming into your lungs thus decreasing the likelihood you are going to get the virus. Still, stay away from huge crowds or big social gatherings. Stay safe everyone!

Some sort of communication

It’s always good to keep some sort of communication to the outside world in your grasp, especially when you are living alone. Having communication to the outside world is important because it can help you keep an update on the current situation.

Some sort of transportation

Having some sort of transportation is very important in apocalyptic situations. It can help you get far or help you escape dreaded situations.

Toilet paper

Last but not least, toilet paper. What can I say? Toilet paper is quite important after all, no matter how serious the situation is.

Historical Figures–What would life be like without them?

April 2, 2020 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

By Chelsea

As we all know, historical figures played a huge part in the making of our history. Their impacts are hugely different from one another, and thus, they made the world what it is today. Here are some famous historical figures that shaped the world. Imagine what life would be like without them.

Without Issac Newton, we would discover gravity much later, thus delaying the progression of scientific improvement.

Without William Shakespare, the greatest plays and stories would not have been created.

Without Charles Darwin, the science of evolution of all species would not be discovered until much later.

Without Nicolaus Copernicus, people would choose to believe in religion that earth is the center of the universe much longer than it should be.

Without Benjamin Franklin, the discovery of electricity would be much later than it was supposed to be.

Without George Washington, America would take much more time to gain its independence, or it would still remain in the Commonwealth.

Without Susan B. Anthony, the women’s suffrage movement would never have made it that far.

Without Adolf Hitler, the Second World War would probably have never happened. The geography of European countries would not have changed during that time. The recovery of the Great Depression in the USA would recover much slower. NATO and the Marshall plan would never exist. etc.

Without Robert E. Kahn and Vint Cerf, our improvement on the internet would have slowed, or never happened.

Without Sergey Brin, our beloved Google would never exist. Or, it would take on another name.

What is Morality?

March 31, 2020 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

Co-written by Renée and Chelsea

Is morality strictly a code of conduct, or ¨standards by which one decides what’s right and wrong,¨ as one of our anonymous sources put it? This is what we tasked our student populace to decide. . . .  Is morality always rational? How does one determine what’s right or wrong? How does one know what’s good or bad? Nature does not seem to bother itself with these questions, but we humans do. Morality isn’t clear cut in our world. There are layers and layers of circumstance to try and factor in. How do we choose between beliefs when we are stuck between two…? Most of us would agree that something such as killing is wrong. But, what is the “right” decision, if there even is a right decision? To test your morality, we presented a paraphrased version of the famous “Trolley Problem” and other moral quandaries.

Survey Questions:

*What is morality (to you)?

*There is a runaway unmanned trolley barreling down the railway tracks. Ahead on the tracks, there are five people tied up and unable to move. The trolley is headed straight for them. You are standing some distance off in the train yard, next to a lever. If you pull this lever, the trolley will switch to a different set of tracks. However, you notice that there is one person tied down on the sidetrack. You have two options:  Do nothing and allow the trolley to kill the five people on the main track. Pull the lever, diverting the trolley onto the side track where it will kill one person. What is the right thing to do?

*As before, an unmanned trolley is hurtling down a track towards five people. You are on a bridge under which it will pass, and you can stop it by pushing a very fat man next to you onto the track, killing him to save five. What do you do?

*As before, a trolley is hurtling down a track towards five people. You can divert its path by colliding another trolley into it, but if you do, both will be derailed and go down a hill, and into a home where there is at least one person living there. Anyone in the home would die. What do you do?

*As before, a trolley is hurtling down a track towards five people. This time you are on it. You can divert its path, but if you do, you would be killed. What do you do?

*You’re a gifted transplant surgeon who has five patients, each in need of a different organ who will die without that organ. Unfortunately, there are no organs available to perform any of these five transplant operations. A healthy young vagabond, passing through the city, comes in for a routine checkup. In the course of doing the checkup, you discover that his organs are compatible with all five of your dying patients. If the young man were to disappear, no one would suspect you and he has no family left. Do you kill that tourist and provide his healthy organs to those five dying people and save their lives?

Aurora: Morality is someone’s personal beliefs. It depends on the person. Survey responses– pull the lever, no push, save the house, save self, no sacrifice patient.

Conner: I don’t know! — no pull, yes push, save the house, kill self, no sacrifice patient.

Leslie: I don’t know. — yes pull,  yes push, yes wipe out the house, kill self, no sacrifice patient.

Leo: Morality involves the values that I hold subjectively (my value system). — no pull, no push, kill self, save the house, sacrifice the patient.

Anonymous: Morality is making an active choice between right and wrong. — yes pull, yes push, yes sacrifice the house, no don’t sacrifice the vagabond patient.

Josh: Morality is knowing right from wrong. — no pull no push, no don’t wipe out the house and occupants, kill self, no don’t sacrifice vagabond.

Sofia: I don’t know how to define morality. — yes pull, yes push, yes sacrifice house occupants? kill self, sacrifice vagabond (if there are no transplant patients if not, then no).

Dominic: Morality is having morals and would be the extent to which one knows right and wrong. — yes pull, yes push, no don’t sacrifice house occupants, no-kill self, sacrifice vagabond.

Anonymous: I don’t know about morality. — yes pull, no push, no don’t sacrifice house occupants, kill self, sacrifice the vagabond. There are too many factors and in real life, I don’t know. There is no “right answer.”

Nathan: Morality is the idea of doing “good” things based on your own code. —  yes pull, no push, yes sacrifice the house occupants, kill self, no don’t sacrifice the vagabond.

Anonymous: Morality is the standards by which one decides what’s right and wrong. — pull the lever, no push, don’t sacrifice the house occupants, kill self, no don’t sacrifice the vagabond.

The “moral” of the story is . . . relative . . . .

How Colors Represent Emotions

January 22, 2020 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

By Chelsea, who’s feeling “blue” today–her favorite color (along with black)

Hey guys, I’m back with the newest post. Editor Luke’s theme is “introspection,” so the topic that I’m going to discuss is how colors represent our emotions inside or the emotions you are trying to express. But, please, keep in mind that not everything is accurate since this post is based on the public’s opinion.

Black: Black usually represents the darkness inside of you. It can represent the bad or evil side of a person. It can also represent death.

White: White is usually the color of heaven or angels, so it represents your innocence, purity, or goodness. But in some cultures, white can also represent death.

Pink: Pink is the color of love. It’s the color that you usually use on Valentine’s Day. Thus, it represents the romantic feelings toward a certain person. It also represents anything sweet, playful, or feminine.

Red: Red is the color that usually represents fire. It shows determination, strength, power, and can sometimes be used for love (the red string that connects soulmates).

Purple: Purple was the color used for royalty and nobility back in the days. It can also represent your own feelings of pride, mystery, peace, and dignity.

Blue: Blue is the color of the sea. It usually represents the trust, loyalty, wisdom, or intelligence of a person. It’s also the color of calm and cool.

Green: Green is the color that usually represents life, nature, and energy. In a person, on the other hand, green can represent one’s ambition, greed, or jealousy.

Yellow: Yellow usually represents the energy, happiness, optimism, enlightenment, honor, or joy in a person.

Orange: Orange is the color that represents enthusiasm, fascination, and encouragement. It symbolizes strength and endurance in a person.

Light Placement drawing tutorial

January 10, 2020 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

By Chelsea

Hello, everyone!! I’m back with another drawing tutorial!! Editor Renée chose “Light” as her theme. So I’m going to teach you guys about light placement in simple objects.

So please enjoy and have fun learning!!

For this, I am going to use a circle as an example.

First, draw a circle. On any media, any surface–just draw a circle.

Second, determine where the light is coming from. Figure out which parts are the lightest and darkest in the circle. And, then, outline the shadow.

Third, add color and shading!!

Follow your previous step and carefully put the shades into the object. Use blur tool if you are on a digital device, and use a tissue or just toilet paper to blend all the shades to create a smooth surface if you are not on a device.

And lastly, add the shadow!! As you can see, the darkest part of the shadow is the nearest to the object because the light reflection is at its minimum point. And of course the further the shadow goes, the blurrier and lighter it gets. So use the blur tool or paper to blur the end of the shadow; it’ll make your shadow’s ending point blend into the background.

We are basically done!! But you are not only going to draw a circle all your life right? So I included some other basic objects and shapes and their shading areas.

And we are done!!!! Hope you like this tutorial, and I hope it’ll help you to improve your drawing~!! See you next time!!
