Why Bunnies Make the Best Pets

January 19, 2022 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

When people think of pets, they usually think of dogs and cats primarily. But what about bunnies? Bunnies are such an overlooked pet, and Jesse is here to tell you why they actually make great companions. Jesse Denyer tells us about her quarantine-inspired love for bunnies. This is a bunny-soft story. She might convince you to get a bunny, too! – Editor Abigail Horwitt

By Jesse Denyer, Bunny Enthusiast

Over quarantine I found myself feeling rather lonesome. My parents and I all worked in separate rooms of the house and would only see each other on random outings to the refrigerator. My dogs would roam the house and the yard all day long, but I feel as though my dogs were almost as bored as we were. I decided to start looking into smaller pets. I looked into hamsters, guinea pigs, turtles, basically all the animals you can get at PetSmart for $10. I stumbled upon rabbits as an idea but quickly dismissed them as they just seemed like “too much work.” A few days later, I was scrolling through Instagram and happened upon a lady who breeds Holland Lop rabbits. As I began to scroll, the cuteness of her baby bunnies was undeniable, and I decided that any animal was going to be a lot of work. I should invest in a pet bunny. I got my bunny Clover in July of 2020, and now, having had him for two years, these are some of the reasons why I think bunnies make the best pets.

First and foremost, and probably the biggest fear I had with keeping a small pet like that in my room, I feared his cage would smell. However, it is quite the opposite. Believe it or not, rabbits can be litter box trained. When he was a baby, I introduced the box to him, and he began using it in no time. Rabbits are very clean animals and do not like their space being dirty. So emptying his litter box once a day is super easy and keeps his cage perfectly scentless.

Second, they make almost no noise. Physically, the only sound I’ve ever heard my rabbit make is when he sneezes, which is a really cute squeaking noise. Besides that, the only noise my rabbit makes is when he bangs around the cage when he is scared, which only happens once in a blue moon. Besides that, they are completely silent.

Lastly, they are just so fun! They are unlike any other animal in their mannerisms and behaviors, and I find constant joy in seeing what my rabbit comes up with next. He is always happy and loves nothing more than to hop up on my bed and take a nap with me. He loves hopping all over the house, and he even goes for walks in my yard on a leash! He is so funny to watch.

Bunnies are perfect for people of all ages as they are easy to take care of, prove to be of little to no inconvenience at all, and are always happy and easy to handle. Getting my rabbit over quarantine and getting to raise him from a baby is one of the best things I have ever done, and I highly recommend everyone consider a bunny next time they want a new pet.

Moldavite: Is It Worth the Money?

September 28, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org 1 Comment

You may have heard of Moldavite. It went viral on TikTok this summer and has been a hot commodity ever since. It costs a lot and has powerful effects. Should you invest in it?

By Jesse Denyer, Amateur Astrologist

Welcome back!

Today I’m going to be talking about one of the most famous crystals to ever exist, moldavite. Moldavite has always been pretty well known for its powers through the crystal community, but after going viral on TikTok this summer, everybody wanted a piece of it. When I worked at the crystal store at that time, I would be asked at least once a day, “Do you have any moldavite?” I would then have to escort them over to the locked glass case we had to keep it in, and after looking at the price tag and hearing my disclaimer, people always shied away from buying it. So, what’s special about this crystal? Why is it so expensive? Where does it come from? Read more to find out!

So what exactly is moldavite?

Moldavite is a greenish black crystal that is part of the Tektite family. Tektite is natural glass caused by debris from meteor impacts. Moldavite was most likely created over 15 million years ago by a meteor strike in Bohemia, Czech Republic, which is the only place moldavite can be found today.

Why is it so expensive?

Moldavite usually goes for anywhere from $400 to well over a couple thousand dollars. Moldavite is so expensive because it can only be found in one place on earth, and it is likely no more will ever form. One day it will go extinct, unless we somehow have another meteor strike. Also adding to the price is the fact that the biggest mine for moldavite in Bohemia recently flooded, making it even harder to obtain. Moldavite is very easy to recreate. You can find fake moldavite (for suckers) easily on Amazon and Etsy. If you google moldavite right now and see anything for sale under $400, I promise you that it is 100% fake. You have no idea how many people I had come into my work each week trying to sell us 60-oz. pieces of “moldavite” that were really just pieces of old melted green vases. Also be wary of anyone selling “African moldavite.” Moldavite is not found anywhere in Africa. You’re not getting a good deal on moldavite; you’re just getting a terrible deal on some Libyan desert glass. Don’t be a fool; if you want moldavite, buy it from somewhere that can verify its origin, and be prepared to pay a steep price.

What are its properties?

Moldavite is known as the “Stone of Transformation.” Its energies are known to be one of the most powerful of all crystals and should be used with caution. As I used to tell people, “It will turn your life upside down whether you like it or not.” It is meant to put your life on the right track and remove all negative sources of energy from your life. It will try to guide you to be the best version of yourself. However, this process is not for the faint of heart. It will split up relationships, remove opportunities, and make you feel like your life is being ruined–when really you are on a path to a better you. Sensitive people will have a hard time with this sort of turmoil. It happens immediately too, and as people tend to wear moldavite on their person, its effects are even stronger. Buy moldavite if you want, but I’ve seen it go two ways. One girl came in and bought a piece and came back a week later crying saying she suddenly felt the need to leave her boyfriend, she was fired from her job, and was now having to move to another state. Although that girl was just on her journey, the sudden change was too much for her to handle. Another guy came in with his supermodel wife, wearing five pieces of moldavite on his body, bought $3,000 in crystals, paid in cash, and explained to me how he meditated through his journey and came out the other side a millionaire living on a ranch in Wyoming, which was always his dream. Moldavite is all about whether or not you can handle the journey it will take you on.

throwninstones.com

So that’s it! I hope you learned a little something about moldavite, and proceed with caution if you are thinking of buying some off of Etsy for 20 bucks. Come back next week where I will be talking about Astrological sign compatibility!

Thanks for reading!

Need Some Crystal Reiki Healing?

September 23, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org 1 Comment

By Jessica Denyer, Amateur Astrologist

Last week our Amateur Astrologist Jesse defined the chakras. As a follow-up, this week Jesse talks about the crystals that go with each chakra. She tells us how we can perform our own crystal Reiki healing at home while using designated crystals. — Editor Roman Rickwood

Welcome back!

Last week we delved into the world of Reiki and learned about all of our chakras and what they mean. I explained how most professional Reiki masters perform chakra work, but you can actually do chakra healing on yourself at home using one of my most favorite things. Crystals! So let’s learn which crystals work for which chakra and how you can use them to get your energies flowing.

For Root Chakra, try these crystals:

  • Hematite
  • Black Tourmaline
  • Shungite

The root chakra is in charge of the feelings of safety and security. Hematite, Black Tourmaline, and Shungite are all strong protective stones which can help you keep negative energies and fear from blocking your root chakra and help balance your energy.

For Sacral Chakra, try these crystals:

  • Carnelian
  • Golden Healer
  • Unakite

The sacral chakra is in charge of your creativity and drive. It is also connected to how you relate your feelings to the feelings of others. Carnelian and Unakite are great stones for getting your creative juices flowing, allowing you to keep your mind clear. Golden Healer is great for helping to deal with your emotions. Not dealing with your emotions can be a huge reason why your sacral chakra could be blocked.

For the Solar Plexus Chakra, try these crystals:

  • Tiger’s Eye
  • Pyrite
  • Citrine

The solar plexus chakra is in charge of your own personal power and identity. It is the base of showing who you are. Pyrite and Tiger’s Eye are great crystals for coming out of your shell and embracing your true self. Citrine is an extreme mood booster that helps to amplify the Tiger’s Eye and Pyrite.

For the Heart Chakra, try these crystals:

  • Malachite
  • Green Aventurine
  • Rose Quartz

The heart chakra is in charge of your own true emotions. It controls how you feel love, empathy, and forgiveness. Malachite and Rose Quartz are great for balancing emotions and attracting the love of others as well as self love. Green Aventurine is a stone of prosperity which helps one to open oneself to being loved and showing love.

For the Throat Chakra, try . . .

  • Agate
  • Chalcedony
  • Angelite

The throat chakra is the center of communication. It allows you to process your thoughts and deliver them in the way you want. Agate, Chalcedony, and Angelite are all great for helping with communicating not only with others, but with yourself.

For the Third Eye Chakra, you need . . .

  • Lapis Lazuli
  • Labradorite
  • Opalite

The third eye chakra is believed to rule over your perception, awareness, and spirituality. Lapis Lazuli and Labradorite are all great stones for helping you keep inner peace and gratitude, and Opalite is great for optimism and staying positive in the future.

For Crown Chakra work, try . . .

  • Amethyst
  • Fluorite
  • Selenite

The crown chakra is known for being the center of personal enlightenment, wisdom, and universal consciousness. Fluorite and Amethyst are great for relieving anxiety and stress, and selenite is a cleansing crystal that is great for helping keep a clear and unfogged mind.

To do your own chakra therapy at home, it is quite simple with these crystals. Make sure your crystals are cleansed and charged. Lie down on a flat surface, and place the crystal on the corresponding chakra. Then do a light meditation for about 10 minutes. This will help remove any energy blockages. So, that is all; come back next week where I will talk about the crystal everyone wants to know about, Moldavite. Why is it so popular? Is it actually that powerful? Why is it so expensive? Go to thebirdonfire.org to find out.

Let’s Learn about Chakras!

September 16, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

By Jessica Denyer, Amateur Astrologist

Hello my fellow transcendent beings!

In my quest to enlighten you all about our universe and how you can further connect to it, there is one thing that cannot be overlooked, and that is the practice of Reiki. Reiki is a type of energy healing. It comes from the Japanese words “rei,” meaning universal, and “ki,” meaning life energy. Reiki aims to help energy flow through your body steadily. If energy becomes trapped anywhere in the body, it can have negative side effects. Reiki practitioners believe that improving the energy flow throughout your body can reduce pain, induce relaxation, and help you live a healthier life. Although this is not a medically proven science, some people, like myself, believe wholeheartedly in Reiki healing.

So, let’s start by talking about Chakras. What is a Chakra? Chakras are known to be energy points within your body. During a Reiki session, you will work to release the flow of your energy and get the right alignment. Let’s identify the Chakras.

The Root Chakra

The Root Chakra is known as the “root of all things.” It is located at the base of your spine. It is the center of all emotional and spiritual balance. The root chakra is most concerned with needs. It governs strength, safety, stability and is responsible for making you feel grounded. The root chakra allows us to thrive in our environment. This is one of the most important chakras because if there is a “root energy blockage” it can affect all of your other chakras’ functions.

The Sacral Chakra

The sacral chakra is known to be connected with pleasure and joy. Located about two fingers above the base of your spine, this chakra can help with artistic expression and creativity as well. It is also important in relating to your emotions and the emotions of others. A blocked sacral chakra can lead to anxiety, nightmares, sensitivity, and self-consciousness.

The Solar Plexus Chakra

The solar plexus chakra is known to be connected to your intellectuality and how you process information. Located right about where the ribcage starts, the solar plexus chakra also controls personal power, accountability, and conveying wisdom. Issues with this chakra can lead to symptoms such as brain fog, low motivation, and low self esteem.

The Heart Chakra

The heart chakra is known for being connected to one’s self love and love for others. Located in the center of the chest, it controls having compassion, empathy, showing forgiveness, and practicing acceptance. Issues with the heart chakra can lead to symptoms like poor love life, depression, shyness and fear.

The Throat Chakra

The throat chakra is the chakra of communication. It allows you to speak freely and not feel held down by your thoughts. Located in the middle of the neck, the throat chakra is also responsible for self expression and projecting your creativity out into the world. Issues with the throat chakra could lead to symptoms like fear of public speaking, anxiety, and lack of creative flow.

The Third Eye Chakra

The third eye chakra is responsible for your sense of intuition and clairvoyance. Located in the center of the forehead, the third eye chakra is also responsible for recollection and memory, your conscious and unconscious self, and extra-sensory perceptions. Symptoms of a third eye chakra blockage is lack of memory, feeling of insignificance, and inability to make decisions.

The Crown Chakra

The crown chakra is known as “the bridge to the cosmos” and is responsible for your connection and awareness to your universal consciousness. Located in the center of the top of the head, the crown chakra is also responsible for the center of your spirit and connection to a higher guidance. Symptoms of a crown chakra blockage can be depression, confusion, loss of self worth, and feelings of disconnection.

Now that you know all of the chakras, allow me to quickly explain what a Reiki practitioner will do to help unblock them. A Reiki specialist will usually feel around the chakras, and hover their hand for minutes at a time to help strengthen the energy by transferring some of theirs to you. This will help to remove any blockages.

So that’s it! You now know the basics of Reiki and chakra work. Come back next week where I will be talking about what crystals go with which chakra, and how you can do your own crystal Reiki at home!

Let’s Learn About Crystals!

September 10, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org 1 Comment

By Jesse Denyer, Amateur Astrologist

Ah, crystals, a recent obsession of mine. You can only spend so much time believing in the world of astrology before you hear about crystals and their powers. I know you’re probably thinking, “Wow, Jesse has really lost her mind. First she thinks the stars are talking to her; now she thinks crystals are giving her powers!” And, if you are thinking that, you are correct. Maybe I have lost my mind, but at least I have my crystals and stars to keep me happy. So, what is the significance of crystals?

Crystals have been used for healing purposes by many cultures. They are meant to help with chakra work as well (I’ll talk about chakra work next column). They are also known to better your connection with the Earth and Universe. Although this has not been scientifically proven, trust me when I say that crystals can change your life if used properly. Holding specific ones for specific meditations can help you relax more and allow yourself to be more open to the Universe. Holding certain stones while manifesting can help you relay your messages better to the Universe. So much as even wearing them around your neck everyday or placing them somewhere you spend a lot of time can have major effects on your life. But, how do I know what I’m talking about?

Funny story. During this past summer I was looking for a job. As I strolled the streets of downtown Palm Springs, I came across this crystal store. I was intrigued, and one might say the energy drew me inside. I immediately became obsessed with buying crystals and using them to heal and manifest. A few days later, I applied and got a job there. I had to learn everything about every crystal from every country. I had to be able to identify them by sight only and know what their purpose was. It was an incredibly fun job, and I learned much. I wouldn’t call myself an expert, but I could probably tell you about any crystal you show me. Why is this all significant? Every sign has a correlating crystal that is known to have helpful energies for that specific sign. A correlative crystal is almost like a birthstone, except way cooler and way more helpful. Follow along as I tell you what stone goes best with your sign!

Aries (March 21 – April 19)

Bloodstone

Bloodstone is definitely one of the best stones for an Aries. It is the stone of vitality, for being strong, active, and energetic.  It is associated with Mars energy, which is the planet that rules Aries. It encourages the bold and creative spirit of an Aries; it also keeps an Aries grounded and supports them in emotional times. Bloodstone is also really good at blocking negativity both from inner and outer sources. To all Aries, I recommend keeping this stone somewhere you spend a lot of time.

Bloodstone

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

Emerald

Emerald

Emerald is an absolute must-have for a Taurus. It is a stone of protection, spirituality, and wisdom, which are all things a Taurus’s life revolves around. It helps the Taurus keep grounded with nature, a necessity for this sign. It also helps this sign communicate with others more clearly as that is something the the Taurus tends to struggle with. The emerald is also a fantastic healer for wounded feelings. A Taurus will never let you know when they are hurting, so it is good for them to have some aid in healing.

Gemini (May 21- June 20)

Agate

Agate

Geminis are always on the move, planning their next step in life, and making sure everything is going according to plan. That can be pretty stressful, which is why they need some agate to calm them down and make them realize that some things can be spontaneous. It helps to relieve anxiety and helps concentration. Geminis are always working, and agate can help them organize their thoughts better. Agate also helps to release tension and anger, even leading to the healing of relationships.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

Moonstone

Moonstone is a great stone for Cancers to use as it heightens powers of intuition, which Cancers constantly use to navigate their lives. It is also a crystal that evokes empathy. Cancers are known for being very protective over the people they love, and this stone amplifies their ability to empathize with others. Cancer is also a water sign, and moonstone is usually more powerful for water signs.

Moonstone

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

Tigers Eye

Tigers Eye

Tigers Eye is a very powerful crystal. For any fire sign this crystal would be an extreme boost of power, but for Leos in particular this crystal will be mighty. It is a stone of courage and strength and will bring lots of confidence and bravery in endeavors. It can also help reduce stress and anxiety to clear the mind for decision making. It allows the Leo to open up and be spontaneous.

Virgo (August 23 – September 22)

Amazonite

Amazonite

Virgos are a very organized sign and try their hardest to always be one step ahead. They can bring along some anxiety and pressure, which is why Amazonite is perfect for Virgos. Amazonite has extreme calming and anxiety-reducing effects. It is one of the best stones to carry on your person as it will bring instant peace in situations of stress. It is also known to bring clarity of the mind and body.

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

Lapis Lazuli

Libras are constantly on the hunt for the truth. That is why they have such a difficult time making decisions. They like to weigh every choice looking for the truth. That is why Lapis Lazuli is so powerful for Libras. It is a stone of wisdom and truth and will heighten the Libra’s ability to see through falsehoods. It is also a stone of courage. Libras tend to be a more timid and soft sign, so some extra courage is always good for them.

Lapis Lazuli

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

Labradorite

Labradorite

Scorpios tend to be workaholics and don’t like to stop until the work is done. Labradorite allows Scorpios to relax and take some time for themselves to process their life and work in a healthier way. Scorpios are also known to be easily consumed by negative energy. Labradorite is known to be one of the biggest protectors of the crystal world, so it helps Scorpios keep up positive energy.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

Smoky Quartz

As the third fire sign of the zodiac, you can imagine that the Sagittarius is pretty fierce. Smoky Quartz is great for the Sagittarius because it can slow them down and allow them to reach a calm state, as they tend to have a temper. Smoky Quartz is also known to relieve negativity and depression. It is also really good for blocking nightmares and deflecting bad energy.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

Garnet

Capricorns are all business. Garnet is fantastic for Capricorns because it is very lucky for both business and relationships. Capricorns are known to be extremely introverted, and Garnet is a great self confidence booster. Garnet allows you to let go of past behaviors and move on to new ones easily. It also allows passions to shine through more easily. Garnet is great for balancing your life.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

Amethyst

Aquarius is always thinking into the future. What is the next step for them? Amethyst allows them to gain more of a spiritual connection to the universe and opens them up to guidance. Aquarians are good at keeping their cool, and Amethyst allows them to find true inner peace and serenity. Aquarians are also wary of their surroundings, and amethyst allows them to trust people easier and let them in. Amethyst allows them to be a little more vulnerable.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

Aquamarine

Aquamarine is known as “treasure of mermaids” and is associated closely with the sea. As a water sign, Pisces has a deep relation with this crystal. Pisces tend to be more laid back individuals, but they are known to be emotional and worry a lot. Aquamarine will allow them to fully relax and fully trust their surroundings and fate. It allows them to let go of past grudges and pain and is known to be a stone for cleansing the soul of traumas.

So, now that you know what crystal is best for you and your sign, let’s discuss how to use your crystals to your advantage. Once you get your crystal, wait until the next full moon and cleanse it in the moonlight overnight. The next day you have to hold the crystal in your hand and meditate with it. It only takes a minute. While you are meditating, think of and set an intention for your crystal. This is important as your crystal’s effects will be much more noticeable if you do this. Then, simply place the crystal either in your pocket, put it on a necklace, or just place it somewhere you spend lots of time. Time to let the crystal do all the work!

So, that’s it! I hope you learned a little something about crystals and maybe even became a believer. Next week I will be delving into Chakras and what they mean and do.

It’s Virgo Season!

August 31, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org 2 Comments

By Jesse Denyer, Amateur Astrologist

Yes, I know what you’re thinking. Wasn’t it just Leo Season? I was unfortunately a bit late with the Leo blog due to there being no school until mid August, but I thought that Leo Season had such cool happenings that I just had to share. Nonetheless, Virgo season is now! It stretches from August 22 to September 22.  Don’t know what the implications of Virgo Season are? Keep reading, and I will give you the low-down on what “Virgo season” means, as well as all the interesting celestial events going on above our heads this very second.

So what does Virgo season mean for you? Although it affects every sign differently, Virgo season has very distinct results. We come out of the gate in Leo season guns blazing. Main character energy everywhere. Look at me! Look at me! It’s a time to let loose and let your inner wild side show. And, although that is fun, all good things must come to an end. A little Leo season burn-out, if you will. We are then refreshed with the Virgo season. It’s a time to calm down, use some common sense, and get down to business. You will feel more grounded and settled. Decisions will come much easier to you, as you are now thinking with a clear mind. It’s a time to get yourself organized and back on track, which will reduce stress. It’s also a great time to purge unnecessary things (or people) from your life. If anything or anyone is holding you back, now is the time to let them go. So hunker down, and do what needs to be done because we have a double whammy coming up next season. Libra season will not only hinder your decision making, but Mercury will be in retrograde for the majority of the season, so say goodbye to whatever plans you thought you had. For now, make the most of this productive Virgo season.

Okay, now let’s talk about some cool events.

The Virgo Stellium

A stellium is the name used in Astrology to describe when three planets are in the same sign. Mars and Mercury were already in Virgo, and now the Sun joins them to create the Virgo Stellium. This will mean that the feelings of Virgo will be pretty extreme this year. We should be feeling an immediate shift in energy due to this. Keep in mind Mercury only changes signs about three times a year, and Mars only shifts signs every 2-3 years, making this a pretty rare and special occurrence.

Mutable Grand Cross

A mutable grand cross occurs when four planets are separated from each other by 90 degrees [irishtatler.com]. Currently the Sun, Neptune, and the Nodes of Destiny are in a mutable grand cross. What are the Nodes of Destiny? The nodes are points in space where the Moon’s orbit crosses the Earth’s Orbit around the Sun. These are called the Nodes of Destiny because they are known to have strong effects on your past, present, and future. This mutable grand cross will also aid you in letting go of the past, focusing on the present, and start planning for a bright future. Take this energy, and do with it what you will.

Full Moon in Aries

On Monday, September 20th, there will be a full moon in Aries. As an Aries this has me very excited. Although I was born under an Aries Sun and not a Moon, I am still very excited to see the Aries energy be spread around to everyone. I feel like this moon really compliments the Virgo energy, too. The Virgo energy will have you locked in and working hard towards a goal. But what goals do you have? The Aries full moon will be there at the end to help you answer this question. Under a full moon, we have access to both our conscious and subconscious mind, revealing clearly what we truly desire in this life. This is why it’s great to manifest during them. The Aries full moon will help you realize what you truly seek from this life. Aries rarely have an issue making a decision and seeing the full picture. The Aries Moon will help you make a decision for yourself. Find your life’s mission during this time. Dig deeper into yourself than you ever have before, and take the time to get to know and understand yourself better. Aries is the sign of the ram, so once you figure out what you need to do and can see clearer through your own eyes, take on the energy of the ram and go head first into your new endeavours, keeping that fire sign spirit with you along your journey.

So, that’s it for today! Next week I will finally be delving into the ever-so-interesting world of crystals and their energies. Until then I hope you enjoy what I like to call “Fall Cleaning.” Get down to business; organize your life, and keep an “out-with-the-old, in-with-the-new” attitude.

It’s Leo Season

August 19, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org 6 Comments

Hello! It’s your amateur astrologist, Jesse. I hope you all had a lovely Gemini and Cancer season and you’re currently soaking up Leo season in all of its glory. (For the uninitiated, Leo season is July 23 – August 22.) Today, I want to talk about some really interesting astrological happenings that have either taken place already or have not yet occurred in this Leo season. So, sit back, relax, and let the stars do the talking.

  • The Lions Gate Portal

Yes, you are reading this right. Portals do exist, just maybe not in the sense you think. The Lions Gate portal which occurred on August 8th was essentially when the Sun, currently in Leo, aligned with a star called Sirius, which is known as the spiritual sun, to create a high frequency energy that is supposed to “open the portal ” between the spiritual and physical world. It’s almost like your third eye opening. A great practice to participate in during a Lions Gate portal is to meditate. Meditation is very important if you plan on manifesting good things for your life, and a Lion’s Gate Portal is a fantastic time to do that. What is manifesting you ask? Manifesting is when you picture a specific goal or aspiration in your mind and think of ways to move closer to it. I also suggest doing your meditation and manifesting with crystals! Crystals like Tigers Eye, Blue Kyanite, and Clear Quartz are great to hold while meditating, especially during the Lions Gate Portal because Tigers Eye promotes willpower, grounding and energy, while Blue Kyanite promotes finding a higher level of spirituality and releasing negativity, and Clear Quartz promotes clarity, focus, and prosperity–the perfect trifecta for manifesting your perfect life. Through this you can access your mind, body, and soul. Although it is too late to practice these things during the Lions Gate Portal,  you now know for next year and can even begin practicing your manifesting and meditating skills today. They’re still great practices even if there isn’t a giant portal open in the sky.

  • Pisces Full Moon

You still have time to participate in this one! It’s this Sunday! If you’re confused why I’m telling you about a Pisces Full Moon when this post is about Leo season events, don’t forget that although the sun is in Leo, the moon still changes signs every two to three days, and the full moon is different every season. Full moons are one of my favorite astrological happenings. Because it is a Pisces full moon, let’s start out with what the Pisces part of that means. During this full moon you are likely to feel more sensitive and small things will mean more to you. You are likely to be more thorough in your daily habits and slow down to smell the roses. You are likely to feel calm even during whatever stressful situations life throws at you. If you were born under a Pisces moon, you are even more likely to feel emotions intensely. So how do you make the most of a full moon? Meditation and manifesting are a great place to start. This is a great time to cleanse your crystals by setting them out in the moonlight overnight. You can make moon water, which is water that you leave out in the moonlight overnight to cleanse it of bad energy. Personally, I think it tastes better, too. A full moon is also a great time to “appreciate the harvest.” So make a big meal, and eat it with people you love, under the moonlight preferably. Really take the time to appreciate the meal as well and all of the nature around you for that matter. Just take the time to get your energies right going into the next season.

So, that’s all! I hope everyone has a happy and plentiful full moon this Sunday and learned something for the Lions Gate Portal next year. Come back next week where I will tell all of what’s to come in this quickly approaching Virgo season and start delving into the world of crystals and chakras.

Astrological Signs and What They Mean

May 10, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org 2 Comments

It’s Taurus season! Don’t know what that means? Based on your birthday, you can learn a lot about the personalities of you, your friends, and your family. Take a minute to read this detailed article by our Guest Astrology Blogger Jesse Denyer!

By Jesse the Amateur Astrologist

Hello, I’m Jesse, and nothing gets me more excited and energized than talking to people about their Zodiac signs and what they actually mean. Lately, I’ve noticed the majority of people at Palm Valley either don’t know their sign, or they know it but they don’t know what it means. Have no fear. I am here to grow Palm Valley’s understanding of their signs!

So what is the Zodiac?

The zodiac is a particular part of the sky that goes approximately 8 degrees north or south of the ecliptic. The path of the Sun, Moon, and other planets are visible within the belt of the zodiac. They move across the celestial sphere over the course of a year. The zodiac is divided into twelve signs with corresponding constellations. Depending on where the twelve signs were in the sky on the date, time, and place of your birth, your core personality was shaped by the sign’s placement.

Now, before you begin to think that this is all bogus, let me explain an important factor in this that will be explained in detail in a later blog post. You may read the summary of your sign here and think, “I’m nothing like that” or “Only some parts of that are right.” You must remember that although your birthdate indicates your sun sign, the time and place of your birth affects your moon and rising signs. Those two other signs have a massive impact on your personality as well. For example, a Capricorn with a Leo moon might not be as aloof as a core Capricorn because Leos are extremely outgoing. For those of you who are left curious about your moon and rising signs following this blog post, don’t worry…. we have something special for you in the next astrology post.

Without further adieu… Let’s get started.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Hello, my fellow Aries! I have a special place in my heart for us. Not to be biased, but we are a very special sign for a lot of reasons. We are the first sign of the zodiac chart, meaning we are the start of a new zodiac cycle. We represent the beginning of new life and the spark of new beginnings. We are also one of three fire signs, associating us with fierce liveliness and an abundance of personality. We are the sign of the ram, meaning we are hard headed by nature; we are known to be very courageous though sometimes reckless. We are naturally fierce competitors and don’t like to go down without a fight. We can be honest sometimes to a fault and tend to have no filter. We can also be sensitive but do not like to show it. We are very generous and would do almost anything for someone else. We are very energetic, loud, and fun, and we enjoy being the life of the party. However, we do have an introverted side, and our social battery does run out after a while. Most of all we are extremely loyal to people, but if trust is lost, we Aries are quick to move on.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Taurus is the next sign of the cycle. They are one of the three Earth signs meaning that they feel a special connection with the serenity of the outdoors and have an overall relaxed attitude. As the sign of the bull, Taurus can be rather stubborn and do not like to take advice. They are extremely ambitious and do not shy away from a little hard work. They value honesty very highly and will turn on you quickly if deception is detected. They will never shy away from an argument, and nothing brings them joy like being right. Tauruses look for security and feel very comfortable in routine and will stop at nothing to maintain that sense of security. They are known to have very kind hearts and are very patient. They are also known to lack confidence at times and may not aim as high as they can for fear of failure. However, if they persist and keep their ambitions high, they can achieve anything they set their strong minds to.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

As an Air sign, Geminis are known to be very “go with the flow,”and are known to be very flexible people in general. They are the sign of the twin because they are not known to be the most emotionally stable of the signs. They can be very moody and change feelings and opinions on a dime. They are very intellectually inclined and find joy in learning new things. Due to their witty behavior, and usual sense of humor, Geminis can be very fun at social gatherings. They are hard to hold down and routine is something that doesn’t really matter to them. They are not known for making plans unless they are at the head of it. They are good multi-taskers which helps strengthen their intellectual abilities. Sometimes they can come across as very cold and aloof, but do not let that fool you as Geminis love very deeply. Sometimes they just forget to show it. Geminis are achievers and don’t stand for laziness, making them great workers in life.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

As a Water sign, Cancers are known for weaving really well between their emotional space and the real world making them an extremely philosophical sign. Cancers love the feeling of home and comfort. As the sign of the crab, they always like to know they have their shell to retreat back into for comfort. Cancers are very protective and will stop at nothing to protect those they love. They are known to be very outgoing but also have a shy side. They are extremely strong willed and can tend to have a “my way or the highway” attitude toward life. They feel emotions very deeply. Though they are good at separating their emotional status from their real life, they are a very emotional sign and can be extremely sensitive. They are very devoted to family and their relationships and will be extremely loyal to you. Cancers are very motivated to get what they want and can sometimes have tunnel vision. However, that motivation ultimately leads them to success.

Leo (July 23-August 22)

As the second Fire sign in the cycle, much like Aries, Leos are known for their passionate nature. As the sign of the lion, Leos have a lot of pride (haha get it). But, in all seriousness, Leos love nothing more than being the center of attention, and they often achieve this with their fiery, enthusiastic, and courageous natures. However, sometimes, they come across as arrogant, as their self confidence is almost always at a 10. They are also natural born leaders, sometimes to a fault–that fault being giving leadership where it is not needed and stepping on other people’s more submissive toes. They are extremely creative as well and love showing off their talents. I promise, if a Leo walks in the room, you’ll know.

Virgo (August 23-September 22)

As the second Earth sign in the cycle, much like Taurus, Virgos are known for their realistic approach to life and have a deep-rooted connection to the material world. Their zodiac sign is represented by the female, meaning they tend to be sensitive and fragile, but also picky and critical at the same time. Virgos are very loving deep down, but on the surface they can appear very cold, as they sometimes suppress emotion. They are very independent and usually successful because of their ability to go at it alone. Although they can appear cold, Virgos are always willing to lend a helping hand to someone in need. They are known for being perfectionists in their work and work meticulously to achieve their goals. They love to better themselves in any way possible and growth is something they find extremely appealing.

Libra (September 23- October 22)

As an Air sign in the cycle, much like Geminis, Libras are very easy going and prosper in a life of harmony and balance. Their sign is represented by the scales, meaning they are extremely diplomatic and try to bring balance to their lives and serve as the balance for other people as well. Libras are extremely charming and make strong relationships. They enjoy the little things in life and are easily pleased. They are naturally kind, even tempered, and extremely empathetic. In their search for balance in their life, Libras can actually be very indecisive. They hate conflict and do not handle it well. Libras are the peacemakers.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21)

As a Water sign, much like Cancers, Scorpios are known for their strong emotions and intuitiveness. Scorpios are the sign of the scorpion, and they usually receive a bad rap. They are stereotyped as being vicious and conniving, with stingers just like actual scorpions. However, this is simply not the case. When you understand a Scorpio’s traits, it makes more sense. They feel emotions very intensely and react the same way. They appear friendly yet their emotions are volatile and unpredictable at times because of their deep passion. Therefore, they react in a volatile and unpredictable manner sometimes. They are also good at self defense. If they feel as though they are being cornered or in danger they will lash out appropriately. They can get carried away with their feelings. Intellectually, they have a lot to offer and just the way they get carried away with emotions, they can get carried away with academics and hobbies. I am quite fond of Scorpios because I understand the way they are wired. Kill the stereotype.

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)

As the third and final Fire sign, much like Aries and Leos, Sagittarians have a controlled flame to their personality and do everything with passion. Sagittarians are represented by the Centaur, a half man-half horse creature from ancient mythology. This is because Sagittarians are courageous, fierce, and always ready for an adventure. Sagittarians have a deep love for exploring the world they live in and love to adventure into things they are passionate about. They are known perfectionists and can be very self critical. They are known for their positive outgoing personality and enjoy attention. However, they do enjoy their alone time as well. Sagittarians hate to be wrong and will rarely back down from a fight or argument. They are known for being very self protective and independent.

Capricorn (December 22-January 19)

As the third and final Earth sign, much like Taurus and Virgo, Capricorns are very stable and grounded to the earth. Capricorns are represented by the Sea Goat, a half goat-half fish creature from ancient mythology, meaning that they flow easily between different types of people and are versatile to different situations. Capricorns are generally pretty serious and confident. They love structure and thrive under direction. They are extremely ambitious and complete anything they set their mind to. They are stubborn, and, even though they can come across very melancholy and quiet, they have an extremely sunny disposition. They are known to worry a lot and stress about things. They are very intelligent, and, especially under direction, Capricorns thrive in challenging situations.

Aquarius (January 20- February 18)

As the third and final Air sign, much like Gemini and Libra, Aquarians are known for dealing with new information and ideas in a balanced and relaxed way. Aquarius is represented by the Water Bearer, meaning that Aquarians are able to take on other people’s emotions effortlessly and are not influenced by them. Aquarians are strong and dominant in life. They know what they want and aim to get it. Aquarians are very good at seeing both sides to every story and are fantastic mediators. However, on the other hand, they can also be fierce in arguments as nobody knows what they want more than an Aquarius. They are extremely good at forgiving and forgetting especially if they are wronged by someone. They tend to hide their emotions as they want to appear sturdy and unbothered. It would take a lot to make an Aquarius cry. They are extremely intelligent and love nothing more than showing off their knowledge, but not in an arrogant way, in a proud way.

Pisces (February 19- March 20)

Pisces is our final stop of the zodiac cycle. As the third and final Water sign, much like Scorpio and Cancer, they float effortlessly between emotions and reality and do let the two interfere from time to time. Pisces are symbolized by two fish swimming away from one another, which exemplifies the separation between emotions and reality. As the last sign of the zodiac cycle, Pisces are thought to be the wisest sign of the zodiac as they are the oldest. They are very sensitive, compassionate, and understanding of others. However, they do not like to put their emotions on display and prefer to keep them under wraps, as they prefer to focus on their own personal journeys in peace and quiet. They avoid confrontation at all costs and prefer to let problems sort themselves out. They are very creative and artistic whether that be through their work or hobbies. They are generally very gentle natured and easy-going, making them friendly and easy to love.

So, there you have it. Do you well represent your sign? No? Stay tuned. Jesse will explain how your moon and rising signs factor into your personality as well.
