What is Gaming Disorder?

By Holden Hartle, who has played video games

In our pursuit this week of everything gaming, Holden uncovers a surprising disorder.

Image result for gaming disorder

I’ll be completely honest, I didn’t think this was real when I first heard about it. But, it’s a real mental disorder that the World Health Organization (WHO) added to the 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) and that the American Psychology Association (APA) added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manuel of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-V) .

What does Gaming Disorder look like? Some of the symptoms according to psychiatry.org include, “preoccupation with gaming, withdrawal symptoms when gaming is taken away (sadness, anxiety, irritability), inability to reduce playing, unsuccessful attempts to quit gaming,  and the use of gaming to relieve negative moods, such as guilt or hopelessness.” These are the same symptoms that someone might go through if they were addicted to a drug of some sort, i.e. the inability to stop and the feelings of sadness and anxiety when it is taken away from you.

Now, if you’re an incessant gamer like me, these symptoms scare you. But fear not, only a very small portion of the population actually has the disorder. The criteria is very specific and needs to last for a certain amount of time in order for someone to be diagnosed. A case study in the International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction states that, ”The diagnosis of IGD is not easy,” and, “[Gaming disorder’s] psychological, social, and health consequences require further study.” The study goes on to explain that little research has been done into the effectiveness of the various types of treatments of Gaming Disorder and which treatment is best.

Another case study, this time from Yale, explains that the dopamine boost in a cocaine addict’s system after a hit is the same dopamine boost from someone who has Gaming Disorder. Furthermore, when a video game addict plays video games, he has conditioned his hypothalamus to reward him every time he plays video games. This makes sense when you consider the fact that a video game addict goes through similar withdrawals to that of a drug addict. When he isn’t playing video games, his body feels empty without the constant string of dopamine flowing through his system

To remind you, a very very very small percentage of the population actually has Gaming Disorder. The screening process is very scrupulous in order for a psychologist to actually diagnose someone. If you feel like you may have this disorder, however, contact your local psychologist, and they may be able to help.

Mercury Retrograde–A Brief Explanation . . .

April 3, 2019 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

By Hannah Hall, Blogger and Extreme Amateur Astrologer

Astrology nerds everywhere blame their seasonal problems on Mercury in retrograde. Problems arise such as communication issues, being easily annoyed, or lack of focus. This blaming of Mercury Retrograde sometimes gets me rolling my eyes, but the general idea of this phenomena is interesting. Retrograde refers to a planet moving in reverse. A planet moving in reverse? What I found in my research is that this retrograde isn’t as wowing as it seems.

First, to put this into perspective, you know when you are in a car and the car next to you speeds up suddenly and it feels like you’re going in reverse? This situation is kind of like the Mercury Retrograde. Basically, both planets are obviously still moving forward, but the perspective that we have on Earth makes it seem like Mercury is going in reverse because the speed at which Mercury orbits is much faster than Earth’s. According to Emily Ridout, folklorist, astrologer, yogini, and writer of Mercury Retrograde: Why You Should Care, “In Astrology, when planets are in retrograde motion, it indicates that the energy of that planet is moving more inward. In our outward, achievement-oriented society, this can seem scary, but I assure you, it’s not.” So with all of that being said, why do we care about planets in retrograde? Most people get the misconception that with astrology, planetary movements dictate our actions and what we have to say and do. But this is wrong. Instead, we are supposed to take in account what is happening around us and take that energy and channnnneellllllllll it into your actions. Specifically during the Mercury Retrograde, our communication skills are affected adversely; this means anything between our speech to the thoughts in our head is affected. You see? This is why people are always buggin’ about the retrograde! It’s because communication is a basic aspect in each of our lives, and when an extraterrestrial body is supposedly dominating and hanging over our every move, a natural reaction would be to freak. But have no fear, even though you may or may not have a sudden loss of focus, or anything of that sort, astrology just suggests during this time you stick to familiar things and don’t start anything new; go easy on yourself; relax. Adventure after the retrograde is over. So continue doing yo’ thang and walk that walk and especially talk that talk.

One more thing: Mercury Retrograde happens multiple times a year! This year the retrogrades are March 5 through 28; July 7 through 31; and  October 31 through November 20.

Particular Parasols

Hello! Here in the Palm Springs area, we don’t get much rain throughout the year. Some people will say that this is all the more reason to buy a cheap umbrella that’ll last a year or two just to protect you when you have to go outside in the winter months. Others, like me, would say it’s all the more reason to treat it like a special occasion to buy a special umbrella. Not sure where to find one? Only see plain, boring, and questionable quality umbrellas at your local stores? No need to fret! You can find plenty umbrella options online!

https://www.umbrellaheaven.com/product/clear-dome-umbrella-manual-opening/

Ever want to show off your outfit despite pouring rain or relentless snow? Now you can! This clear dome-shaped umbrella will allow other people (or social media users) to see your wonderful outfit despite the bad weather! This umbrella also provides even more coverage due to its dome shape, which is possible due to the clear material that allows you to see your surroundings!

https://www.umbrellaheaven.com/product/big-top-umbrella-for-him-blue-and-white/

Do you love the aesthetic of large circus tents? Now you can bring it with you wherever you go! This Big Top umbrella resembles the blue-and-white tents you’d see when the circus rolls to town, and it matches the expectation of size due to being a golf-sized umbrella (which are larger than your typical umbrellas)!

https://www.umbrellaheaven.com/product/mini-max-compact-folding-umbrella-silver-uv/

Ever want a break from the sweltering heat of the sun and need a quick rest in the shade, but there’s no shade in sight? Don’t use any old umbrella, cuz the UV light from the sun is gonna pass right through the canopy and hit your skin! The white outer-canopy blocks and reflects the harmful UV rays of the sun, while the black inner-canopy absorbs UV light to protect you from stray rays that bounce off of the ground and would otherwise concentrate onto your face after bouncing off the inside of the white UV-reflective canopy!

https://www.pasottiombrelli.com/en/women-luxury-umbrellas/blue-swarovski-umbrella-double-cloth/pr-1694

The second most expensive umbrella I could find, this blue beauty costs around $570 USD. It’s made of a double-cloth 100% polyester satin weave, and has Swarovski crystals in the canopy and handle. The stunning fade of dark to light blue in the canopy gives a dazzling contrast to the white Swarovski gems.

https://www.pasottiombrelli.com/en/women-luxury-umbrellas/189-5d557-1-luxury-swarovski-bee-umbrella/pr-1848

The most expensive umbrella I could find costing around $600 USD, this beauty has a double-cloth canopy with a brass handle and Swarovski crystals. The outer cloth is a dark forest green while the inner cloth is a floral-butterfly pattern. Both fabrics are a 100% polyester satin weave. The handle has a wonderfully crafted brass bee with Swarovski crystals.

Image result for sleeping cat

Hi buds! Here is a picture of this special little guy. This cat represents all I want right now after all the stress of Senior year: a warm place to snuggle and a nice long nap. I hope you have a weekend that is as wonderful as this kitty. I hope this kitty inspires you to take it easy once in a while. This time of year gets extra stressful (Juniors, I’m looking at you), so do something for yourself this weekend! Do the important thing: take a nap; eat a snack; pet a cat, and spend time with family and friends 😉

Werewolf–One of the Best Modern Party Games

March 8, 2019 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

By James Zheng, Master Game Player & Blogger

What games do you usually play for entertaining a party? Normal answers will come out: Uno, Cards Against Humanity, Mario Kart, Blackjack, etc. We’ve played those games a thousand times. All of them are really popular but common, so common they bore you as you play them over and over again. There is an amazing game which would definitely bring up the atmosphere in a party.

The Werewolf game is really similar to a classic party game called the Mafia (Werewolf is actually generated from the Mafia game). They have the exact same setting on some points; however, the Werewolf game is more fun than the Mafia! Originally, when you look up the Werewolf game online, there is only the American style, which is also the initial version of Werewolf. When it spread to China, this game became truly popular and players added more contents to it. So, please notice that all the things I show you are partially generated from the Chinese-style Werewolf game.

Required factors to play the game include six to fifteen players and role cards. Ten or twelve is the best amount. This game must have a moderator during the whole game to direct the procedure. The role cards are decided by players according to the number of participants.

Gameplay part 1–There are two teams in the Werewolf game; humans and werewolves (which also applies to the innocent and the mafia in The Mafia). The Werewolf team has to kill all the humans while all the humans need to banish the werewolves. To achieve their goal, werewolves have to pretend to be the humans to avoid being banished so that they can eliminate as many humans as they can. In the same way, the humans have to find all the werewolves based on the flaws in their statements or any other factors.

Game setting–Everyone should get a role card before they start, and the moderator must be ready, then the game will begin on the first night. There are two rounds in the game, which refer to the night and the morning. Night is always before morning; it will keep rotating until the game is finished. An essential part of the game, during the night, is that the moderator has to tell everyone to close their eyes and remain absolutely quiet. The Lord card (a card which gives players special skills) and the werewolves’ card holders will be called by the moderator to take their action. Werewolves have to decide to slay a player every night. When it comes to the morning, the player who is killed during the night will be out of the game. Then, each of the players need to speak their thoughts individually. The time limit for speaking (30 seconds, 60 seconds, etc.) should be decided before the game begins. After everyone finishes their statement, they have to vote to eliminate a player. Then the player who gets the most votes will be out of the game as well; this movement is called banish.

Role cards

  • Villager, belongs to the human team. They do not have special abilities, but they have to listen to everyone’s words, find the werewolves, and be active in voting to banish them in the morning.
  • Werewolf, belongs to the werewolf team. They will be called by the moderator, “Werewolves, please open/close your eyes” before/after they take action. Werewolves usually have 20 seconds to point at their target. During the morning, they need to act like humans and mislead them to banish other players beside themselves.
  • Seer, the Lord card belongs to the human team. When Seer is called by the moderator, he can see one person’s role (he can only identify whether that person is a human or a werewolf, so he does not know if that person is holding a Lord card or not).
  • Witch, this Lord card belongs to the human team. Witch is holding a cure and a poison. When called by moderator, he can only take one action each night. He can use a cure to revive a player who was slain by a werewolf or use poison to kill one player. Witch only has one cure and one poison.
  • Guardian, this Lord card belongs to the human team. When called by the moderator, Guardian can protect a player (including himself) from being killed by a werewolf. But, he cannot protect the same player twice in a row. By the way, the poison used by the Witch can penetrate the Guardian’s shield.
  • Hunter, this Lord card belongs to the human team. The Hunter can eliminate one player after he is dead. The only moment he cannot use his skill is when he is eliminated by poison from the Witch. When called by the moderator, the moderator will tell him if he can use his skill or not–based on whether he was poisoned or not.

Further tips and details

  • The player who is banished or out of the game in the first night will still have a chance to speak.
  • Only the werewolves know who their teammates are. Humans don’t know who their teammates are. And werewolves can say that they are human, and normally mask as villagers (since there are at least two or four villagers, it is hard to know which one is fraud).
  • To find the werewolf or to suspect someone, try to treat this game as a psychological game. If you find someone too nervous or too feeble, they might hold a werewolf card. Or, if you find someone who is speaking too much or too little, they will be questionable. You can always take a guess at everyone’s card according to their statement.
  • The core of this game is the Seer because nobody knows who other players are except the Seer. Only the Seer and werewolves have the ability to lead the teams. And the Seer has to share his or her information on the first day.
  • Each player has to be brave to speak out their opinion and tell others their identity, and be active in voting.

The Werewolf game is my best recommendation ever. It’s a very social game because you have to speak and communicate with each other to collaborate during the whole game. It’s also a really casual game to play with friends!

random things to do

March 4, 2019 by szachik@pvs.org 1 Comment

By Makena Behnke

i don’t always like to be on my phone or on the computer when i have spare time; it makes me feel good when i’m not sucked into social media or random websites. but, as a student, it’s hard to make time for things we want to do. i get it, but if you do happen to have time to spare and you’re not sure what to do without your phone, here are some suggestions:

  • do some art. whether it’s drawing, colouring, painting, or photography, or really anything creative, it’s a great way to let some energy out, and it’s fun. whatever you decide to make doesn’t have to be good. just let it all out.
  • go for a run. you don’t have to run fast or far, maybe just a quick dash around the block. you don’t even have to put shoes on or any special running clothes. (i like running barefoot; it feels good to feel the pavement.)
  • read. maybe you’ve been meaning to finish a book you started a while ago, or you want to re-read your favorite book. maybe you can explore a new genre you haven’t really looked at before.
  • clean, & re-organize. this sounds really… not fun, but when someone isn’t forcing you to clean, it’s not that bad. maybe sort through your bookcase, or sweep the floors, something simple. it always makes me feel more productive, plus my room is cleaner than it was. it’s a win-win in my book.
  • explore your area. if you haven’t ventured outside your home much and into the possible random shops and restaurants you may have around you, you might want to explore. even if you don’t think you’ll find anything, it’s always good to just take a look. and, if you live in a strictly residential area, just wander around and see what houses you’ll find; maybe you’ll see a cute dog or something.
  • watch a movie. sitting down with some snacks or maybe doing some art while watching a movie is always nice. it’s less mentally destructive than being on your phone or computer, at least for me.
  • find new music. click on a genre you wouldn’t usually spring for, find something new. i usually type a random word into my spotify search bar and listen to a couple songs or an album that pops up. i’m not always successful, but it’s still fun.
  • sleep. when all else fails, just sleep. you can take a quick nap to fast forward to something you’re looking forward to (a dinner, movie, etc). or you can nap to fill time. let’s face it: we all need more sleep.

Website Showcase: Pew Research Center’s Political Typology Quiz

March 1, 2019 by szachik@pvs.org 1 Comment

By Luke Langlois, Internet Explorer

Hello, faithful and loyal readers. I want to bring something brand new to THEBIRDONFIRE.ORG. I would like to start doing an occasional website showcase because the internet is a vast landscape, and, quite frankly, there are so many nifty websites or tools that most people have never heard of. Later on, we may venture into the wild west of the internet. I would like to present a political typology quiz in anticipation of the upcoming election. Many Americans make what is called a “latent” decision when election day comes. They make an opinion based off of split-second decisions. Which candidate’s name do I recognize? What has the news said? What are the polls like? To make an informed decision, an individual has to know what they believe. Additionally, an individual deserves to know what each party stands for, and what party they most closely align with. This is why I implore whoever is currently reading this to take Pew’s Political Typology Quiz. This short quiz will give you seventeen questions of two choices. You should pick the choice that more closely represents your belief, even if it does not 100% represent your belief. After all of the questions, the quiz will show you where you fall on the typical “left-right” spectrum. Do note that this quiz is courtesy of Pew Research Center, and your response will be anonymously recorded for their research purposes. Find the link below!

Cookie

By Hannah Hall

The perfect pairing for a glass of ~almond~ milk is a warm chocolate chip cookie (peep Makena Behnke’s perf almond milk recipe in her previous post). This recipe comes from fellow student and cookie connoisseur Oliver Kaufmann.

Things U Need!

–Baking sheet

-Oven

-Two large bowls

-Teaspoon

-Measuring cups

-Whisk

Ingredients!

-½  cup softened, salted butter

-1 cup brown sugar packed

-1 egg

-1 tsp vanilla

-¾ cup of all purpose flour

-1 ½  cups of crushed graham cracker crumbs

-½ tsp baking soda

-¼ tsp of salt

-1 cup chocolate chips

Steps!

Preheat your oven at 350°.

Whisk brown sugar and butter together in one bowl.

Add vanilla and egg to the brown sugar and butter mixture, and whisk.

In another bowl mix flour, graham cracker, baking soda,  and salt.

Then, slowly add the dry bowl into the wet bowl, and whisk together until a massive ball forms.

Fold in your chocolate chips, and make smaller balls (like spoon-sized ones). Put them on your baking sheet, and bake for 7 minutes.

Take them out ‘n eat! 🙂

*Suggestion: Cool your heated cookies in Makena’s almond milk beverage.

Review of Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne—An Old Game That Will Never Fade Away

February 14, 2019 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

By James Zheng

Blizzard, which is known as one of the most famous game-producing companies in the United States, has always striven to design the best games out there. But, the major game I am going to introduce in this post was from sixteen years ago. Unlike an anime or a movie, a majority of games tend to easily become old-fashioned or hackneyed. They last for at most ten years since games are always being published incessantly; this process is like an elimination system. You pay for the new, and drop the old. Some games survive, though. And, one of the survivors is Warcraft 3.

First of all, let me give you a basic description of this game. Warcraft is a real-time strategy game. The purpose is just as simple as this: you engage in a war to conquer your enemy by rallying an army. And, when it comes to strategic games, you might think that they are usually complex or difficult because you have to play it smart and pay attention to a lot of details. But, the fascinating thing is that you can come up with at least a thousand tactics, simple or complicated, to play based on the diversity of units. Units, also known as minions, are the main force of your army. They all have different capabilities. Warcraft 3 also has a simple game structure. To start a game, you choose one of the four races (Human, orc, etc.) to bring into battle. Every race has their unique advantage. If you want to build more advanced buildings or recruit more powerful troops, the game would explicitly indicate what you need to do. The most attractive feature has to be the hero system, or champion system. You get to select a champion you like to lead with. All of these factors are essential to reinforce the replayability, and are the reason that the game has survived so long.

The love for Warcraft 3 seems to hardly decay, and it may just keep growing. Recently, Blizzard has decided to make a “reforged” version of Warcraft 3, which, ironically is the game they had already given up on ten years ago. There is only one factor, the most important element, that keeps this game alive–the creative choices of the individual player. It is very easy to use mods in Warcraft. In addition, players have designed massive amounts of maps and new modes to keep this old game running. You can play with your friends, or endlessly compete with online players. In the end, Warcraft 3 is a game that is much more deep than a simple strategy game.

You might think that this game is too old to play, but, as I’ve said, it is a game that will never fade away. Check out the new reforged version!

a bangin’ almond milk recipe

February 8, 2019 by szachik@pvs.org 2 Comments

By Makena Behnke

since milk has been a hot topic on the blog (and in blog class), i thought i would share my preferred form of milk beverage. almond milk has become very popular recently, and for a good reason. if you have some sort of dairy allergy or you just don’t like to drink it for whatever reason, “ta-da,” almond milk. i prefer to drink almond milk, but i personally don’t like store-bought almond milk. so, i make my own, and i think it’s a lot better.

things you’ll need:

  • almonds, 1 cup
  • water, 4 cups
  • blender
  • nut bags or cheese cloths
  • a medium bowl
  • a container (i use a glass milk bottle) for your fresh almond milk

1. first, you have your 1 cup of almonds, and you soak them for about 4-6 hours in the medium bowl. the water should cover the almonds (i use about 4 cups).

2. after soaking the almonds, you pour out the stale almond water and rinse the almonds to get the residue off. the almonds should be kind of tender right now, or at least not as hard as the dry ones were.

3. put them in a blender with another 4 cups of water, and blend them until there are no big almond pieces. i’m not sure how long it takes to blend, i just play it by ear.

4. pour the mixture into a cheese cloth/nut bag covering another bowl with a pour spout thingy (so it’s easier to pour into the bottle). once you’re done pouring it into the bowl, you squeeze the leftover pulp in the cheese cloth to get the most out of the almonds.

5. bam. you’re done. this makes about 3 cups. the almond milk keeps for about 2-3 days.

i like to use my almond milk in baking recipes, coffee, cereal, or you can just drink it straight because it has a natural sweetness to it. you could also add flavored syrups to the blender, but i prefer it plain. if you don’t strain it enough or if the bag breaks, there may be some almond pulp left in the bottom. it’s not going to kill you. enjoy.

my original recipe came from detoxinista.com. i didn’t make it up on my own.
