A Look Back at the PVS Pep Rally

Part of our What’s New in the PVS Neighborhood series

On Friday, December 5, PVS held a pep rally with a fun bunch of activities. There was an elephant game, tug of war, and several important sports and Nest announcements. The gym was loud, and everyone was invested in this memorable event. One thing that made this pep rally different from our previous ones is that the lower schoolers were invited to join the Nests. While usually the Nests are only for Middle and Upper-School students, having the Lower Schoolers “made the event feel more energetic,” 8th-grader Ivana Vega said. Overall, it was a great way for the school to come together and show school spirit.

Secret Santa

Part of our What’s New in the PVS Neighborhood series

By 8th-Grade Blogger Soleil Antle

It’s officially December which means Christmas is around the corner! This year the Palm Valley school’s eighth-grade students are doing a Secret Santa gift exchange! How it works is you put everyone’s name in a hat or random name generator and you blindly get chosen a name. You don’t tell anyone who you have until they open their presents on the day of the exchange. Emerson Dunn tells us why the eighth grade decided to host the exchange this year.

We decided to do a Secret Santa this year because we also did one in sixth grade with Mr. Killeen and Ms. Maguire, so we thought it would be fun to do another event where we could give our friends gifts. I think it’s a good way for us to come together more, and since we all randomly pulled one of our classmate’s names, it’s a good way for us to learn what they like . . . when we are gifting them. It’s also a good way to get into the holiday spirit! – Emerson Dunn

I can’t wait to see who pulled whose name!

The Saga of Bishop Sycamore

September 14, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

If you have never heard of the high school Bishop Sycamore it’s because it’s not a real school. Bishop Sycamore played the #1 ranked school in the country, IMG Academy, in high school football on the night of August 29 on national television. IMG Academy, a boarding school in Bradenton, Florida, took on Bishop Sycamore in a game that was supposed to be a high-scoring dogfight of a game with both teams supposedly having a lot of college-bound players on each team. However, the score said otherwise, with IMG blowing out Bishop Sycamore 58-0. The first red flag was when ESPN failed to produce numerous names for Bishop Sycamore players as the “school” failed to provide them. This game led many, including Forbes magazine, to suspect the legitimacy of Bishop Sycamore as a school as well as a football program (forbestalk.com). The game resulted in investigations into Bishop Sycamore’s background, standing, and licensing. The investigation led to many more questions and almost no answers. Bishop Sycamore is listed as an all-online charter school; however, they get no funding from the state or the federal government. Also coaches failed to produce an official website or address for the school. Then the suspicions came down on the players, specifically on their ages. At first there were rumors of players as old as 30. However, these rumors were never actually proved. Another thing that came up was that the night before Bishop Sycamore faced off against the best team in the nation, they played against another school; due to the dangerous aspect of football, this is a complete disregard for health and safety of players as fatigue often is the leading cause of injuries. Most games are played a week a part.

It appears that the motive behind Bishop Sycamore scheduling games against far superior opponents comes from the want to play on national television. To make matters worse, the Bishop Sycamore head coach at the time of the game had active warrants out against him. Fox News has him being sued by multiple people.

While the Bishop Sycamore situation has become something of a joke, these adults took real advantage of young athletes by promising them things they could not deliver. As well, they put them in harm’s way by making them play games on back-to-back nights. In a statement, the new coach tried to explain that Bishop Sycamore was not a high school, and then proceeded to give a shaky explanation for what exactly they are–a “post-grad football academy” (USA Today). Whatever the outcome is for Bishop Sycamore and its players, the memes that are Bishop Sycamore will live on.

A game of spirit

Today I would like to recommend a leisure adventure game. The name of this game is Sky: The Children of Light. In this game, the player will play the child of the sky, fall on the mainland as a meteor, and take risks from then on.

There are seven maps in the game. The scene design of each map is very exquisite and ingenious. As a relatively successful worker in mobile 3D games, I can say that I like the role interaction and character design very much.

Players can play different characters in different costumes, and the color of wings will be different. As players find golden figurines in more maps, they can upgrade their wings. The higher the level of wings, the higher they fly.

What I want to focus on is the setting of ancestors in this game. In this game, ancestors are called spirits. Players can only find candles, that is, customs clearance props, if they follow their ancestors’ steps. Therefore, spirit is a very important theme in this game. In the last level, only players can reach the top of the Eden with mutual help. This also relies on spirit, so spirit can help us to maintain ourselves, be positive and look forward to the future through difficulties.

*Doreen says if you’re interested in the game, you can download the game from the Apple or Android store. Do it, and play together with Doreen!

Ghost Hunting?!

March 6, 2020 by szachik@pvs.org 1 Comment

Editor Katelin assigned the Blog Staff to explore “Spirits.” Luke, with plans to go to college, has a Plan B–Ghost Hunting.–S.Z.

By Luke Langlois

Have you ever been trying to fall asleep at night when, suddenly, you hear a chilling whoooosh or an eerie creaking? Being the mature and fearless person you are, perhaps you brush these noises off as your cat doing cat things or the refrigerator… refrigerating. But, let’s be real. The thought has passed through your mind that these mysterious noises originate from a much more sinister source: spirits and ghosts. Although we may not know the intentions of these lost souls, do we want to be taking any risks that could land us on a one-way train to a similar state of being? Don’t just sit around and wait for the ghosts to get you; get up and go ghost hunting! In honor of the “spirit” theme, here are some basic tips for hunting the specters and phantoms creepily whirling around our mortal plane of existence.

  1. Always Bring a Friend: Before you do anything, you must find a buddy to assist you in this ghost hunting endeavor. Working alone may sound appealing because, after all, it is what Batman does, but you are not Batman. If you’ve ever seen a horror movie, you would know that if you hunt alone, you may end up becoming the hunted. . .  So, whether it’s your puppy, your goldfish, your ant colony, or your best friend Joe, you can find your strength in numbers, as long as you all are brave.
  2. Do Your Research: When dealing with spirits, the element of surprise is on their side. You have no idea what the spirits may manifest themselves as! If you go hunting without knowing what threats the spirits pose, you may find yourself in a lethal situation. Ghosts were once living creatures themselves, and, like living creatures, each ghost is unique. Depending on your location, the type of ghost you encounter may be different. If your house was built on the site of a Mafia shootout, for example, you must be prepared for an aggressive and vengeful spirit.
  3. Bring the Proper Equipment: Fending off the paranormal is not something you can do with just your hands and mental fortitude. Just like with any other activity, you will have more success hunting ghosts if you have the proper equipment, especially if that equipment is of a high-tier quality. For a ghost hunt, you will need a pen, paper, camera, flashlight, and a mobile phone. You will want concrete evidence when you find your ghost, and if you are unable to ward the ghost off the first time, you will have more information for your next attack. If you’re dealing with a more advanced ghost, you will want to look into digital laser thermometers to detect their spectral energy. Spooky!
  4. Movies Are Not Reality: Just like with anything else, movies are not reality. Don’t believe that one viewing of Ghostbusters makes you an experienced ghost hunter. All of the ghosts in that movie are heavily exaggerated. The ghosts won’t typically be giant ectoplasmic monsters. Real ghost hunting can be boring, and sometimes you won’t find anything. Look, practicing your ghost hunting isn’t an exciting process ALL the time, but it is just so rewarding when it does pay off. Patience is key when hunting ghosts.

If you are afraid of ghosts, today is the best day to begin conquering your fear. If you learn to conquer the unseen, is there anything that could stop you? I think not! Begin your ghost hunting journey today…

*Luke does not condone hunting ghosts, nor does he hunt ghosts himself.
