The financial future of collegiate sports.

August 26, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org 1 Comment

By Roman Rickwood, Collegiate Sports Enthusiast

The NCAA and universities have been able to use the names, images, and likenesses of college athletes since the dawn of television and endorsement deals, but the college athletes have not been able to profit off their own names, images, and likenesses. This all changed in July that completely shook up the collegiate sports world. The Supreme Court ruled that college athletes would be able to profit off their Name, Image, and Likeness (otherwise known as the NIL rule). Up until this rule was enacted, the tyrannical and poorly run NCAA was very strict about players making or accepting any money. There have been multiple cases of players accepting money to buy necessities and then being punished by the NCAA through suspension or sometimes stripping them of their achievements. The most famous case of this is what happened to Reggie Bush and his Heisman. This story was one of the most controversial involving the NCAA to date and is an example of what The Atlantic calls a “theft of college athletes’ labor” (“Give Reggie Bush His Heisman Back”).

usctrojans.com

In 2005, Reggie Bush was the running back for the University of Southern California, Bush broke tons of records and was looking forward to owning the record books and forever being a collegiate legend. In 2005, USC won 12 games and the National Championship with the tremendous effort of running-back Reggie Bush. That year deservedly so the Heisman Trophy was awarded to Reggie Bush. Soon after both USC and Bush were under investigation by the NCAA for accepting money. The NCAA investigation found that Bush and his family accepted money and perks throughout his time at USC from multiple sports marketers hoping to sign him when he eventually went to the NFL. The NCAA made USC forfeit all wins in which Bush played, including the 2005 National Championship. He also famously was the only player in college football history to return his Heisman Trophy. Not even OJ Simpson had to return his 1967 Heisman after being found guilty of double homicide in civil court. The return of the trophy angered many people who felt that Bush was robbed, and many believe that this was the start of the conversation about college athletes’ right to earn money.

For many years most people believed that college athletes were already getting paid in the form of scholarship as well as food, room, and board. However, because less than 1% of all college athletes make it to their sports’ respective professional leagues, people thought it unfair that the majority of these college athletes would graduate and go into the real world with nothing monetary to show for it. Another common thing that would happen to these elite athletes is injury. Too often they would have to stop playing the sport. Although there is an incredible amount of money that is generated through collegiate sports, the college players do not see this money. I have always struggled with the argument that collegiate athletes should be paid because to me it would have to be a flat rate to each player, which does not make sense as different players hypothetically generate different hype. If you take a football team, for example, people may tune in to watch the quarterback, so it does not make a whole lot of sense that the starting quarterback and the 3rd-string right tackle are making the same money. Because of this, the Name, Image, and Likeness ruling makes the most sense. It allows for an equal playing field for all athletes to profit off of their name and use their platform as athletes on social media. This opens the door for all athletes to profit and not just athletes that play televised and monetized sport. However, as much as I like this ruling and as much as I think that it is long overdue, I do see a few things that could lead to issues down the road in these young athletes’ careers. Right now with the tremendous influence of social media, there is potential for big brand deals and marketing opportunities.

Currently, the highest reported earner (and you could say the face of collegiate NIL deals) is Alabama quarterback Bryce Young. It was reported a month ago that he was closing in on almost a million-dollars worth of deals in just two short months (fortune.com). While this sounds great and in theory is great for these young people’s families and futures, you do have to bring up the elephant in the room. Young people coming into a significant amount of money, very quickly, can have negative consequences. You can make the comparison to child actors or really anybody who came into a lot of money at a young age and lost perspective, resulting in the derailing of life. While the rule is new, I can expect that these big universities with students making huge amounts of money will begin to offer some form of financial planning or financial literacy courses among their athletes making money from NIL. I am excited to see the NCAA finally be told off, and I am even more excited for the opportunities that these young people will now have. This ruling was a long time coming, and I am extremely confident that it is not going anywhere.

The Two-Ingredient French Dessert So Simple Even You Can Make It

August 25, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org 1 Comment

By Ike Spry

What if I told you that you could make a simple French dessert, and you’ll always have the ingredients for it? Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? I know how laborious homemade desserts and pastries can be. There’s the requirement of elaborate cookware, expensive ingredients, and the constant fear of messing up.

The French meringue is probably the simplest dessert you could ever make. All you need is eggs and sugar; yes, that’s it. This dessert, although simple, can take some time and technique, but I’ll walk you through how to make this dessert perfectly every time.

  • First prepare a baking sheet with parchment, and preheat the oven to 225 F.
  • Then, separate egg whites from their yolks; this is a simple step but easy to mess up. You need to make sure that there is no egg yolk mixed in, as it can prevent the whites from whipping. The ratio between egg whites and sugar is traditionally a 1:2 ratio; you can use less, but it may result in a collapsing meringue.
  • Now, you can whip the meringues with just a whisk, but it may take a long time. It is recommended that you use an electric hand whisk or stand mixer, but neither are necessary. All you need is a whisk, but I recommend getting some helpers if you do so. Some recipes recommend stabilizers like cream of tartar, lemon juice, or salt. But, I don’t these are necessary for the home cook.
Ye ole piping bag
  • Once the egg whites start foaming, gradually add the sugar by spoonful. About ¼ cup white sugar per egg white. The whipping process will take a different amount of time depending on your mixing utensil, but you know when you’re done when you can put the mixing bowl over your head without the meringue falling over. You can pipe the meringue onto the prepared baking dish with a piping bag, but a spoon will also do.
  • Now, bake the meringue cookies for one hour. It is also worth noting that you can take them out to cool immediately after the hour is finished for a chewier cookie. But, if you would like more traditional meringue cookies, leave them in the oven for another 1-2 hours with the oven off.

And, voila, that is how you can make a delicious French dessert that you will almost always have the ingredients for. Hopefully, you’ll love them as much as I do.

The 8th-Grade Shares “Where They’re From”

August 24, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org 2 Comments

To start out their study of the American Story, 8th-grade literature students composed poems detailing where they’re from, what objects define their households, their upbringing, their culture, and their roots. The following is a sampling of the food, products, and stories that surround our vibrant, many-voiced 8th Grade.

I Am From Poem

By Matteo Lam

I am from Maui Ocean

From Coconut hand soap and Nba 2k Sports

I am from a spacious cool house

Comfortable, cozy, with the aroma of delicious food

I am from a watermelon seed,

giant leafy vines, flowers budding, green all over with the exception of the unfortunate leaves spotted by the scorching sun, and finally my matured watermelon at the end of the vine.

I’m from Christmas and bringing Santa and brown eyes

From Natalie and Christina

I’m from taking off my shoes in my house and warm greetings on arrival from school

From “Do your best” and “be safe, have fun”

I’m from Christianity, always praying for peace for All.

I’m from Santa Monica and an Italian Mamma and an American Asian Dad

Musubi, pasta

From getting a fish hook stuck in my finger, taking it out myself and rejecting a hello kitty bandaid

The independence of my older sister

In my house walls pictures of memories

Reminds me of all the good times we’ve had

I am from those moments and the dream of what I will become.

I Am From

I am from a small house

From Dr. Pepper and Cherry Coke

I am from the seeds of home-grown tomatoes

(Red and yellow, as sweet as sugar)

I am from dandelions and grapefruits

Resilient and kind

I’m from reunions and feasts

From James and Trisha

I’m from the work and friendliness

From yeses and nos

I’m from Catholicism and Christmas

I’m from Palm Springs

Hamburgers and rice, bundt cakes as well

From the skunk in the barn

The recipes of Elizabeth

In the closet, relics and photos

Showing who was there, and when they were.

I Am From

By Nicole Jowitt

I am from receipts turned into bookmarks,

from Barilla Pasta and Safeway shopping bags,

I am from the wood chips in the backyard,

sharp, miscellaneous, they crinkled beneath my feet.

I am from the redwood trees,

Who I remember towering over me like giants.

I’m from red envelopes and talking until the clock strikes midnight,

I’m from Michelle and Cullen,

I’m from play fights and road trips,

From what was that? and let me see your grades.

I’m from sleeping in on Sunday mornings,

I’m from the green fields of Ireland and the bustling city of Hong Kong,

hot-and-sour-soup and crumbly coffee cake,

From my great-grandmother’s graduation from law school,

To the multi-colored quilts my grandfather made.

Boxes hidden under a bed hide photos of all ages,

Slowly slipping from black and white to color.

I am from those photos,

aged yet unmoving,

tying me to my past.

I am from technology

From Google to Teslas

I am from the lanterns across the backyard

Glowing, bright, as you could feel the heat

I am from the roses

Who we still use to this day for respect

I’m from Nowruz and kindness

From Ryan and Sena

I’m from the sweet tea but not as sweet as walking the dog

From you have to be a doctor and no food until your room is clean

I’m from the value of peace and solidarity

I’m from the rockets launching to the beautiful roads of Iran

Guarma sabsi to cooked kabab

From our grandpa telling years of stories of his childhood, where we quickly fell asleep

I am from the old tire swing hanging from the tree in our front yard.

From Cactus Cooler and Otter pops.

I am from the old house down the street

overgrown, tall, and shady.

I am from roses,

With a smell as strong as they are red.

I’m From birthday bumps, and Brown eyes.

From Carla And Merrit.

From bobbing legs up and down uncontrollably

And Always turning work in just a bit late.

From Monsters under my bed,

And Bravery Is key.

I’m from going to church with my friend

And The smell of pine needles on Christmas.

I am from the tall mountains of Canada.

From Kimchi, And sour candy.

From the time we went sledding across a highway.

From the dark brown hair and eyes.

I am from the Pictures still above the fireplace reminding us of simpler times.

From the wolf carving passed down for generations since WWI.

I Am From

By Ciera Carr

I am from ants

feeding off of the kitchen counter,

taking over cereal boxes.

From colorful tide pods and Bounce dryer sheets

From mold growing on the concrete floors

(a broken sprinkler flooded the house, creating a kiddie pool in the living room)

I am from watching as wasps invade the mud dauber’s nest

I’m from leftovers and supplements in the fridge

I am from John and Tonya

I am from reciting the best lines of Austin Powers and Stripes,

From binging horror movies my mom was too scared to watch

From being told not to touch locked cars

due to the possibility of electrocution,

A fear ingrained by my father.

I’m from untraditional Christianity having arguments with atheism,

Flowers weren’t needed, for the topic of religion was already the centerpiece of our dinner table.

I am from the humid south and frigid northeast,

holding hands in the sand of a scorching desert.

From experimental concoctions and unflavored white chicken, more than meeting the caucaisian stereotype

I’m from the demented mind of a former school teacher

(Great Grandma Maude taught the students of her memory even while deaf, blind, and dying in her bed)

From the screeching of my father’s singing as he tried to impress my mom,

comparable to the mating call of a moose.

The pictures on our walls are of strangers,

old celebrities smiling and laughing with wide beady eyes

boring into one’s soul,

While the pictures I am connected to are hidden,

tucked away in ripped cardboard boxes,

buried beneath old clothes.

I am from these forgotten photo albums and baby pictures,

Old, crinkled, and yellowed, causing everyone to appear jaundiced,

they tie me to both my past, and the past of my family.

It’s Leo Season

August 19, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org 6 Comments

Hello! It’s your amateur astrologist, Jesse. I hope you all had a lovely Gemini and Cancer season and you’re currently soaking up Leo season in all of its glory. (For the uninitiated, Leo season is July 23 – August 22.) Today, I want to talk about some really interesting astrological happenings that have either taken place already or have not yet occurred in this Leo season. So, sit back, relax, and let the stars do the talking.

  • The Lions Gate Portal

Yes, you are reading this right. Portals do exist, just maybe not in the sense you think. The Lions Gate portal which occurred on August 8th was essentially when the Sun, currently in Leo, aligned with a star called Sirius, which is known as the spiritual sun, to create a high frequency energy that is supposed to “open the portal ” between the spiritual and physical world. It’s almost like your third eye opening. A great practice to participate in during a Lions Gate portal is to meditate. Meditation is very important if you plan on manifesting good things for your life, and a Lion’s Gate Portal is a fantastic time to do that. What is manifesting you ask? Manifesting is when you picture a specific goal or aspiration in your mind and think of ways to move closer to it. I also suggest doing your meditation and manifesting with crystals! Crystals like Tigers Eye, Blue Kyanite, and Clear Quartz are great to hold while meditating, especially during the Lions Gate Portal because Tigers Eye promotes willpower, grounding and energy, while Blue Kyanite promotes finding a higher level of spirituality and releasing negativity, and Clear Quartz promotes clarity, focus, and prosperity–the perfect trifecta for manifesting your perfect life. Through this you can access your mind, body, and soul. Although it is too late to practice these things during the Lions Gate Portal,  you now know for next year and can even begin practicing your manifesting and meditating skills today. They’re still great practices even if there isn’t a giant portal open in the sky.

  • Pisces Full Moon

You still have time to participate in this one! It’s this Sunday! If you’re confused why I’m telling you about a Pisces Full Moon when this post is about Leo season events, don’t forget that although the sun is in Leo, the moon still changes signs every two to three days, and the full moon is different every season. Full moons are one of my favorite astrological happenings. Because it is a Pisces full moon, let’s start out with what the Pisces part of that means. During this full moon you are likely to feel more sensitive and small things will mean more to you. You are likely to be more thorough in your daily habits and slow down to smell the roses. You are likely to feel calm even during whatever stressful situations life throws at you. If you were born under a Pisces moon, you are even more likely to feel emotions intensely. So how do you make the most of a full moon? Meditation and manifesting are a great place to start. This is a great time to cleanse your crystals by setting them out in the moonlight overnight. You can make moon water, which is water that you leave out in the moonlight overnight to cleanse it of bad energy. Personally, I think it tastes better, too. A full moon is also a great time to “appreciate the harvest.” So make a big meal, and eat it with people you love, under the moonlight preferably. Really take the time to appreciate the meal as well and all of the nature around you for that matter. Just take the time to get your energies right going into the next season.

So, that’s all! I hope everyone has a happy and plentiful full moon this Sunday and learned something for the Lions Gate Portal next year. Come back next week where I will tell all of what’s to come in this quickly approaching Virgo season and start delving into the world of crystals and chakras.

Thanks for reading!

The Ford F-150 Lightning vs. Tesla Cybertruck

June 2, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org 1 Comment

America’s best- selling vehicle now has an electric alter ego. Allow Blogger Jake to introduce you to the new Ford F-150 and Tesla’s upcoming Cybertruck.

By Jake Sonderman, Business Correspondent

2022 Ford F-150 Lightning First Look: The Electric Pickup Has a Shockingly Low Price, Mega Specs
Cybertruck | Tesla

With over 600,000 units sold a year, the Ford F-150 pickup has been America’s best-selling vehicle for years (kbb.com). More recently, Tesla has grown exponentially in the last year and has made a name for itself by being different from other traditional car manufacturers. Tesla further differentiated itself with the introduction of the Cybertruck, an electric pickup with very high performance and a very unique, futuristic look. Ford, however, recently introduced the Ford F-150 Lightning, an electric F-150 that is almost indistinguishable from a traditional F-150 in appearance. These two trucks are set to hit the market in 2022, and I am fascinated to see how they will measure up. Though you cannot buy either of these trucks from the dealership just yet, we still can compare them to see each’s advantages and disadvantages.

Performance

The performance for the dual motor versions of each truck is remarkably similar, with the Cybertruck at a slight edge.

For both, 0-60mph is around 4.5 seconds.

The F-150 Lightning upgraded version (about the same price point as the Cybertruck dual motor) has 563 horsepower, and the Cybertruck has an estimated 690 horsepower (motortrend.com). Take this with a grain of salt as Tesla hasn’t released numbers like the truck’s horsepower, and that number is only an estimated number.

The F-150 Lightning has 775 lb-ft of torque, and the Cybertruck dual-motor is estimated to have 824 lb-ft of torque. For reference, a gas-powered 2021 F-150 has 570 lb-ft of torque.

Both models (including the upgraded F-150 Lightning) have a 300-mile range.

*stats from ford.com, tesla.com, and kbb.com.

Exterior and Interior Appearance

Obviously, the Cybertruck is not exactly trying to fit in. Those who purchase the Cybertruck are looking to stand out. This is pretty much the stark opposite of the F-150 Lightning. This truck is barely distinguishable from the normal F-150. I have to say that the appearance of the Cybertruck is certainly limiting its market. While the Cybertruck might have superior performance, it has a look that only a specific consumer likes. In my opinion, if the Cybertruck adopted a more tame look in line with Tesla’s other cars, it would most definitely end up selling more trucks in the long run. The appearance is the most clear difference between these two vehicles.

The interior of the Cybertruck follows suit with the exterior. Instead of a steering wheel, it has an airplane-inspired yoke. All features are available in the 17-inch display, and, of course, there is no switchgear (kbb.com). The F-150 has an interior very similar to other Ford 2021 vehicles, with a 15.5-inch touchscreen in the middle of the dash.

Ford F-150 Lightning Advantages

Ford is touting the Lightning’s ability to be used as a backup generator for your entire house for three days (with a full charge)! There are also multiple outlets on the vehicle to use during a camping trip or whatever you please. The F-150 Lightning also appeals to a different market than the Cybertruck in my opinion, simply because of its appearance. The Lightning is a clear attempt to create an electric vehicle meant for work and practicality. The Cybertruck is probably competing more with the Raptor crowd, looking for high performance and flash. The F-150 also has an actual steering wheel.

Cybertruck Advantages

The most clear advantage of the Cybertruck is the option for a tri-motor truck. This truck has the performance of a sports car, with a sub 3 second 0-60 mph, 800 horsepower, and 1,000 lb-ft of torque. For reference, 18 wheelers have 1,000-2,000 lb-ft of torque (auto.edu). This much performance is far beyond practicality but will certainly attract the certain niche sporty-truck audience. You can also, of course, use Tesla chargers.

Mermaids in the Ocean??!!

June 2, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org 1 Comment

In this blog Hannah describes many different types of sea life. Good luck exploring! — Editor Roman Rickwood

By Hannah Hall, Nature Correspondent

It’s summer. Quarantine restrictions are loosening. The time is coming when you will see, splashed across social media, people on their tropical vacations. Although I am not one of those people, congratulations to you if you are. Still, that doesn’t mean I can’t create a makeshift island experience. I found one way to do that is pretend snorkeling. All you have to do is look up snorkeling pictures underwater.

Unfortunately, you will not find mermaids, but here I have done a little bit of research regarding some species you can find under the sea.

Green Sea Turtle

The green sea turtle has a smooth dark brown or olive-colored shell and green-tinged flesh which comes from their diet. They are herbivores and eat reef, sea grass, and algae. Hatchlings, however, do eat jellyfish and invertebrates. When fully grown, on average, they are 3-4 ft long and 350 pounds but can get up to 5ft and 700 pounds! The turtles migrate throughout the entire ocean during their lifetime, but only females come to shore to lay eggs. Female turtles always go back to the same beach on which they were born no matter the distance. They lay about 100-200 eggs, and they hatch in over two months. Oftentimes predators such as birds and crabs will go after these eggs and hatchlings, which makes the yield pretty low, estimating that only 1 in 1000 or even 1 in 10,000 survive till adulthood. Green Sea Turtles are an endangered species, but, unfortunately due to hunting, man-made accidents, climate change, and habitat loss, the numbers are still waning. In fact, the National Wildlife Federation predicts that “90 percent [of the sea turtle] population decrease[d] over the past half century.” Still, their lifespan is pretty long, ranging from 80-100 years.

Clownfish

Clownfish, also known as false clownfish or clown anemonefish, are known by their iconic bright orange color with white and black stripes, but they can also come in colors such as “pink, red, yellow, black, brown and multi-colored stripes” (livescience.com). Clownfish live in the south-east corner of the world in shallow waters. They create a symbiotic relationship with anemones as they use them for protection, and the clownfish eats the parasite within the anemone. All clownfish are born male but are hermaphrodites. They have the ability to change their sex to female, usually for mating, but once they change, it is not possible to change back. Their social circle is led by one dominant female, which is the largest fish. The second in charge is the largest male fish. If the female dies, then the dominant male will transition to being female, then the new largest male will become second dominant as a replacement. According to the National Aquarium, clownfish eat algae, zooplankton, worms, and small crustaceans.

Anemone

Anemone, as we learned before, are a big part of the clownfish lifestyle. Anemones do, however, have a life of their own. One other includes green algae. NatGeo says “in exchange for providing the algae safe harbor and exposure to sunlight, the anemone receives oxygen and sugar, the bi-products of the algae’s photosynthesis.” If jellyfish was a kind of coral, that’s what an anemone looks like—they are all actually related. Anemones come in the colors of the rainbow and have tentacle appendages and a base-like structure. They use their tentacles to sting and contract fish into their body cavity. They have one hole which leads to their gut, but that also means they have one way out if you know what I mean. They remarkably can weigh up to 440 pounds, and their mouths can open up to 2ft wide!

There are many other species that you will come across if you actually get to go snorkeling. Let me know what kinds of tropical creatures you wish I covered.

Looking for places to hike in the valley? Keep reading Nature Editor Hannah Hall’s list of favorite trails–from the most beautiful to the quickest! –Editor Sara Habibipour

By Hannah Hall, Nature Correspondent

In the desert, we are lucky to be surrounded by mountains. Not only do they make for great scenery, but climbing them makes for an excellent workout. There are so many trailheads in the desert, and they all have their unique qualities. Here are some versatile hikes I recommend.

Best Sunrise/Sunset

The Cross Trail in Palm desert is 2.3 miles long. This trail is well known, but you never know whether or not there will be many people on the trail. This is an out-and-back style trail, but right when you start the trail (go to the right, not up the street) there is a nice table with a lookout directly angled to watch the sunrise. Once you keep hiking this trail, if you keep going you will see a pad of cement with yin yang on it. It is always being graffitied with different colors, so it’s super cool to check out. There is a great spot to checkout the sunset. Although the view isn’t direct, it is flat and you can see all of the twinkling city lights.

Sunset View: Palm Desert Cross Trail
Yin Yang just below pinnacle of Palm Desert’s Cross Trail

Most Beautiful

Tahquitz Canyon is a part of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians Reservation located in Palm Springs. The loop is 1.9 miles and is heavily trafficked. What makes this hike so unique is that there is a 60-foot waterfall within the trail! The water is really high and refreshing during the springtime. The Outdoor Club went on this hike when it was super-duper hot, and once we dipped in the water (we actually galloped in) we screamed and splashed with relief and joy. We were so cooled that the hike back was a breeze. I really recommend this hike for the beauty and the waterfall experience.

Outdoor Club @ Tahquitz

Quickest Trail

This trail is a 2.7 mile loop. It may seem long by the length of miles, but it only takes me an hour every time I do it. It is the Roadrunner and Chuckwalla trail. This trail is situated right behind Rancho Mirage City Hall. I like this trail because it sort of has a built-in warm-up incline, which I think is what makes this trail seem so easy. All I can say is the trail is super easy to follow, and you can even cut it short by walking back down the street instead of the other mountain. This hike also has a nice sitting area for a sunrise. What makes for a delightful surprise, during the winter time it has a Christmas tree set up, and you also get sick views of the snow-capped mountains from afar.

Climb above Rancho Mirage City Hall, and this will be holiday-time view.

So what are Moon and Rising signs?

May 28, 2021 by szachik@pvs.org Leave a Comment

After Amateur Astrologist Jesse’s last post, hopefully you now understand the details of your Sun sign. But, that’s not the only zodiac-related business that influences who you are. Read more to learn about your Moon and Rising signs–they can make all the difference. –Sagittarius Sun, Aquarius Rising, Pisces Moon Editor Sara Habibipour

By Jesse the Amateur Astrologist

Welcome back my celestially binded friends!

In my last post, I explained everyone’s Sun signs and what they mean. If you read the synopsis of your sign and thought, “That sounded kind of like me, but this was off,” don’t dismiss Astrology as a hoax like so many do. Your Moon and Rising signs also play a huge role in your personality.

So what is a Moon sign?

The moon moves very quickly around the sky. It only takes the moon about a month to travel through all the zodiac signs and spends only about 1 to 2 days in each sign. While your Sun sign can easily be found by the month and day of your birthday, your Moon sign is a bit harder to calculate. Your Moon sign can come down to the day, hour and even minute of your birth and where exactly you were born.

What does your Moon sign control?

While your Sun sign mainly controls your core personality traits and habits, your Moon sign controls how you feel things emotionally and your inner mood. It is the second most important influence on your sign. Don’t give up on Astrology just yet ‘cause learning your Moon sign might just blow your mind.

But there is also a third key factor as to who you are astrologically, and that factor is called your Rising sign.

So what is a Rising sign?

As previously explained, the Sun spends about 30 days in one sign and the Moon spends about 2 days in one sign. The Rising sign, also known as your Ascendant, is what sign is on the horizon at the exact time of your birth. Again, another reason that the exact time and place of your birth is extremely important in knowing your exact zodiac chart is because as the Sun and Moon are ever changing, so is your Rising sign.

So what does your Rising sign control?

Your Sun sign controls your core default personality, your Moon sign controls your inner emotional self, and your Rising sign controls your outward self and how people perceive you at first glance. It is how you present yourself as a person. Although not always as accurate compared to how you think people perceive you, ask a person what’s their first impression of you and compare their description to your Rising sign. See any similarities? Yea, I thought so.

I promised my readers something special last time, and here it is! If you email me the date, time and place of your birth, I will calculate your Sun, Moon, and Rising signs for you. Below will be summaries to come back and compare your results to. So, if you are interested in getting to know who you are through your Big 3 Signs, my email is jdenyer@student.pvs.org. I’m excited to help you all learn more about yourselves!

Aries Moon and Rising:

Moon Sign

Emotionally, Aries Moons can be quick to anger but also quick to cool. They surprisingly don’t hold grudges; although they forgive, they don’t necessarily forget. Sadness, as an emotion, is something Aries Moons will rarely let escape the confines of their mind. However, in private, it can be expressed through a need for solitude and alone time to process. Once processed, Aries Moons are back to their happy-go-lucky, positive selves.

Rising Sign

If you are an Aries Rising, chances are you come across to people as bold, confident, and opinionated. Depending on who is on the receiving end of your Aries Rising, people can see you as a bit obnoxious and over the top. You are seen as being fiercely competitive, sometimes to a fault. You are very instinctual and tend to leap before you look and usually don’t ask for permission. You are either the leader of the tribe or lead other parts of your life.

Taurus Moon and Rising:

Moon Sign

Though extremely hard-headed, Taurus Moons are known to be quite sensitive and loving by nature. They love very deeply and strongly and expect the same love back. This can make them be very possessive and controlling over the people they care for most. If they feel disrespected or betrayed in any way they are known to deeply repress the emotions and let them sort themselves out in the mind over time. They are not quick to act out of anger, however they are known to be passive-aggressive. They thrive off of security and comfort and emotionally seek that in partners.

Rising Sign

Taurus Risings are interesting. It’s like flipping a coin on how they will present themselves in certain situations. They can present themselves as being stern and confident. They can seem intimidating and even unapproachable. However, they also have a softer side that can present a loving and caring personality. They can be misinterpreted as being materialistic; however, they are actually just lovers of the material world and finer things.

Gemini Moon and Rising:

Moon Sign

Gemini Moons are known to get bored very easily whether it be with people or with their life in general. Problems that arise for them are dealt with by putting on their rose tinted glasses and they tend to just ignore their emotions until they become a huge issue that can no longer be ignored. This habit can usually lead them to trouble. Geminis are lovers but have a hard time showing it; however, they do feel the love very deeply. This again can lead them into troubled relationships. They are not very trusting of people and are extremely wary of others. However, they love to have fun, and, when they are happy, they are very outwardly happy and extroverted.

Rising Sign

Gemini Risings are very outgoing and friendly. They come across very welcoming and approachable and make friends easily this way. They seem extremely creative and love to live life to the fullest. However, they can seem very scatter-brained and unfocused. You can always usually find a good and welcoming friend in a Gemini Rising.

Cancer Moon and Rising:

Moon Sign

Cancer is ruled by the Moon, making them one of the most emotional signs. Due to the Moon’s constant and rapid changing, Cancer’s feelings tend to be all over the place, giving them the reputation for being somewhat moody. They feel very deeply in every way and relationships mean alot to them. Because they are so emotional and are easily hurt, they tend to also have a hard outer shell to protect those emotions. You will only get so many second chances from a Cancer Moon before you are lower than dirt in their eyes, so be careful how you treat one.

Rising Sign

Cancer Risings are extremely caring, warm, and nurturing individuals. They are usually the mom of the friend group. They love everyone until you spite them. You know the grudge will be never ending if you have wronged a Cancer Rising. They like things exactly how they want them and will stop at no cost and let no person get in their way to accomplish this.

Leo Moon and Rising:

Moon Sign

Being the kings and queens of extroversion, Leo Moons hardly feel the darker emotions. They are fierce leaders and love to keep their place at the top of the pyramid at all times. During times where Leo Moons feel those darker emotions, their knee-jerk reaction is to use over confidence and borderline conceitedness to boost their ego back up to its regular height. Overall, Leos are extremely positive and happy people who enjoy being the center of attention and life of the party.

Rising Sign

If a Leo Rising walks in the room, I guarantee you will know. With their vibrant style and flair Leo Risings are truly captivating. They love being the center of attention and will stop at nothing to achieve that status. They are very loyal friends and will do anything to help someone. Fierce lovers and extreme extroverts, Leo Risings will capture the attention of everyone around them and have a reputation for being “the loud ones.”

Virgo Moon and Rising:

Moon Sign

Virgos are highly intellectual beings and have little time for outward emotion. However, internally, they spend a lot of time over analysing situations and little things which can drive them a bit crazy and distract from things that are important. They tend to be very critical of themselves and picky. However they are emotionally the strongest when striving to better themselves.

Rising Sign

At first glance, Virgos come across as very organized, level headed, intelligent, and friendly. They are likely the person you would go to in a crisis moment, as they always seem to know exactly what to do. They have a deep rooted connection to Earth and much like it they are constantly evolving, never staying in the same rut for too long.

Libra Moon and Rising:

Moon Sign

Libras spend an enormous amount of time trying to keep their life and the people around themselves as harmonious and balanced as possible. They will likely put others’ wants and needs before themselves believing it will bring them balance, however it is just as important that they get what they want and need, as in the long run depriving themselves will only lead to unbalance and unhappiness. They then tend to become a bit bitter and snarky with others as Libra Moons feel that the other person got to be happy and now they don’t. It is best that Libra moons focus on themselves just as much as others to achieve their necessity for balance.

Rising Sign

Libra rising will always put up a positive front around people no matter what is going on below the surface. This comes from their want and need for everyone to be happy. Libra Risings are extremely pleasant and loving and will do anything for you. They can be extremely indecisive and will tend to put others’ needs before themselves. They are extremely social and always like to be in the know.

Scorpio Moon and Rising:

Moon Sign

Scorpio Moons feel emotions very deeply and tend to hide them very easily. Their emotions are extremely volatile and Scorpio Moons can change their opinions on a dime. When they are feeling dark emotions they tend to go quiet and into themselves which can make people suspicious of them. They have a tone of fire and will argue with anyone about something they are passionate about.

Rising Sign

Scorpio Risings tend to be very mysterious, quiet, and aloof at first glance. They always seem to be thinking which can sometimes scare people and make them suspicious. They are watchers and love to gather information. It might be hard to make friends with a Scorpio Rising at first because they are very guarded, but once you make friends with them, they will be loyal ‘til the end.

Sagittarius Moon and Rising :

Moon Sign

Sagittarius Moons are very good at concealing feelings. However, they are quite emotionally in touch with themselves. They are very balanced and tend to deal with their emotions quickly and directly, which is why they hardly ever make their way above the surface. They tend to not keep secrets very well because they hate the emotional burden of it and, in spilling a secret, will usually create more turmoil for themselves.

Rising Sign

Sagittarius Risings are known for their energetic and super friendly nature. They are easy to make friends with and love to go on adventures and explore the world. They love to learn about new things and find the truth to every story. They are almost always positive and friendly and are very easy to get along with. They are very outspoken and extroverted, usually making them the center of a friend group.

Capricorn Moon and Rising:

Moon Sign

Capricorn Moons are known for being creatures of solitude. They are very comfortable in their own company and require lots of alone time. People can easily be too much for a Capricorn, and after a day of being in a social situation, they are known to retreat back into their comfort zone in solitude. However, it is important that they not spend too much time in solitude, as they are likely to get sucked into a depressive state.

Rising Sign

Capricorn Risings are very mellow creatures who crave alone time. They can seem very shy and quiet and they are extremely focused on their own personal goals and greatness. They hold themselves and others to a very high standard and are constantly striving to achieve their new personal goals. Though not the most social butterflies, Capricorn Risings still make great friends and are very easy to talk to. Just don’t expect them to get too worked up over your drama.

Aquarius Moon and Rising:

Moon Sign

Aquarius Moons are known for seeming quite aloof and hiding their feelings. To them, showing emotion is a sign of weakness, and they would prefer to uphold their reputation of being sturdy individuals. They tend to deal with their feelings more in private. That is unless that feeling is anger, in which case, Aquarius Moons tend to have a spiteful tongue; if you are the source of that anger, I would look out.

Rising Sign

Aquarius Risings tend to march at the beat of their own drum. It is hard to tell an Aquarius Rising what to do, and they tend to be very individualistic and not a team player. They tend to be very concerned with themselves. However, they do make great friends as they are extremely loyal. If you ever give them a reason to distrust you, just know that they won’t cut you loose. but you will never be trusted again and grudges will be held until they die.

Pisces Moon and Rising:

Moon

Pisces are extremely in touch with their emotions and are not afraid to show it. They have extreme empathy and compassion for those around them and they are known to cry over silly things and seem very hyper emotional. They are extremely caring of others and love doing things for other people just out of the kindness of their heart. Sometimes they get a bad rep for being too sensitive.

Rising

Pisces Risings tend to come off very carefree and friendly. They are very caring and empathetic towards others. Due to this, it is extremely important that Pisces pick friends who understand their good intentions and wont walk all over them or take advantage of them. A Pisces Rising will help anyone in a bind. They are very mellow and easy going, and tend to let others make the plans. They are also known for having a goofy sense of humor that charms many.

I hope you can now have a much better understanding of who you are and what your Big 3 Signs mean. After all, it was all written in the stars! This will be my last blog post of the year, but have no fear, I will be back in full force as soon as next school year starts and have many exciting plans in store.

Have a lovely Gemini, Cancer, and Leo season everyone!

Love,

Jesse, your Aries Sun, Taurus Rising, Pisces Moon, Ameteur Astrologist
